Problem with electricity 850 1992

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought that one of the functions of the ECU was to control the amount of gas fed to the engine by regulating the time the injector was open. I would think that having the injectors squirting fuel all of the time would lead to a hugely over-rich condition, black smoke, and fouled plugs and O2 sensor. Even though the intake valve is closed, with the injector squirting continuously, wouldn't all that extra fuel just get sucked into the engine when the valve opens? What am I missing here?
