Even a FWD V70 with genuine snow tires will do remarkably well in snowy conditions.

Your friend's Q7 is one of those trendy new machines that is neither truck nor car, but rather an expensive, high-fuel-use compromise that weighs as much as a truck but doesn't have the function. The BMW X6 is the most extreme of the breed - utterly useless and purely designed to be a statement machine to impress the leaser's social set. They are the consequence of a resource like gasoline being incredibly cheap in our society.
