Check Engine Light 850 1996

All,
We have a 1996 850GLT. The check engine light came on a while back. By the time I got the appointment schedule for service the light went out. My questions, did the light burn out or did the problem self correct? If I turn the ignition to the run position, without starting the car, the check engine light does not come on, should it? Car runs great, gas mileage is fine, no smoking or drivability problems. Just need to know if the light is burned out or did the problem self correct.
