Inconsistent transmission V70-XC70

I recently purchased a 2000 V70 with 12,000 miles. It has a 5 speed automatic transmission.

Very often, particularly when the car is cold, there is a substantial pause between gears two and three. This seems to especially happen at slower speeds. Sometimes instead of a pause there is a hard shift between 2 and 3.

Also, in the lower gears, upon acceleration the transmission just doesn't seem to be "there." It seems to take a moment to recognize what gear it should be in.

Any suggestions on how I should handle? The dealer was not able to help, though they are inquiring to Volvo central.
