2002 t5 Turbo - low oil - turbo damage

SOS, wife's 02 v70 T5 165k ran low (2.5 qts) oil - until I drove it one day - heard whirling sound with acceleration. Evolved into rough idle and stall. When I accelerate, engine smooths outs. Low idle is a mess. Lopes and wants to stall. Hunch is fried Turbo. Anyway to test - bypass? Anyone changed out turbo on this car? DIYs? PITA? Any and all advice greatly appreciated.
