Cool;ant odour in the car 850

Winter (if we ever get any rain) is creeping in.
I switched the heat on and a coolant smell was being omitted from the heater thru the vents.
I checked the level and yep the level was reaching min.
I topped up and three weeks later the smell was still there and yep it was obvious there was a leak inside the heater core or hoses but after removing the side cover (near my feet ) i noticed there was an overflow tube under the plastic core covering, running outside, which meant if there was a leak it was either too slow to show or it would just go out thru the tube(good safety precaution) i couldnt see anything obvious.
Is there any one with any knowledge or experience or as to why or how I can fix this mess as it looks to be a big job in reaching the heater core .Has any one any experience or know how or has this happened to anyone else
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanx in advance

I just had the same problem with my 1996 850R...with only 113000kms and being in Sydney Australia I also relised that the Aircondioning was sick too.
Unfortunately its a dash out job, best left to the pros.
Once the dash was out the mechanic, a Volvo Specialist, also found the AC evaporator was leaking too...so I replaced the heater core and the AC evaporator. Very costly surprise......but loving the car as musch as I am think its well worth it. Im also told that the new replacement heater cores and AC evaporators dont suffer the same problems later.
So it not good news....but if you think youre capable of pulling it to bits give it a shot.

    Cheers

It is a decent sized job getting in there but it can't hold a candle to doing an evaporator. I thought Bay 13 had a tutorial on it but if they do I cannot find it. You will just have to do a little searching around as I know I have seen it somewhere on one of the Volvo forums. It really is not that hard as there is an access panel to get to it and you do not need to pull all the stuff out of the way like when you do an evaporator.

Have I had a similar problem? Sort of, I own my own Volvo independent repair shop, so while I may have never have had the problem I know plenty of people who have. The evaporator requires pulling the entire dash as well as the climate control housing out of the car. The heater core is no ways near as involved, although you may need an evaporator too and at that point you would be time and money ahead to do it all at once. But if it is just a heater core you are wanting to change out it can be done without pull the dash. Let me do a little looking around and I'll see if I can't come up with some pics for you.

Cheers thankx for the help, in the meantime i've looked up the manual - it points to clamping the 2 heater hoses to stop the fluid entering- then undoing them (place some toweling around for spillage)Then unscrew 4 screws ,2 each side of the plastic core surround and removing the core. Sounds simple so ill see how it goes.
