Canadian car in USA ... ODOMETER in Km?

I am looking at purchasing a 1994 850. The Carfax vin number report shows it was originally sold and owned in Canada, but that it has been regestered in the USA for several years now. I am going to view and test drive it tonight.

The owner says the cars odometer is in Km, but the Carfax report it says it has 274,728 MILES. Is it just really 274,000 km (170,154 miles) or does the odometer have to be converted when the car is brought over? There are no odometer readings from when it was in Canada, only from California DMV. Could it potentially cost me money to have to convert the car's odometer from the metric system? Could this be a problem with resale or anything else in the future?

There are no problems with running your Canadian car over here. I have a couple of customers that have them and other than the Km issue the only other problem is they're not OBD II compliant. Your '94 car wouldn't be anyhow so that probably won't effect you. The services tend to get screwed up on them though with the whole Km versus miles thing. I had one guy that brought his car in and he was 15,000 Km off on his schedule. We are currently trying to get him back on track. Also, some of them run the two valve engine and the timing belt for that darn thing is like $85.00-$100.00 for the part alone! They also do not run a check engine light, they light off the "lambda" light like days of old. I had a customer just fail her smog for the Lambda light on.
The Car Fax report is all well and good but do yourself a favor and have a competent Volvo tech check it out BEFORE you lay out your hard earned cash for it.

Well, the Lambda light does come on as well as the service light comes on and goes off. Are there any fault codes I could check for? The sellers say they took it to a mechanic and that the mechanic says the light is just stuck on or something.....

Now there is the real problem. From your profile you are in L.A. and that is going to be nothing but a great big expensive pain in the ass for you. It is the responsibility of the selling party to provide a smog certificate and if they do get it smogged with that light burning it will be your baby 2 years down the road when you have to get it smogged. That light is the check engine light, if there is no underhood blink box to flash out codes you will need to see the local Volvo dealer and have them do it. If that light is on constant then you have a code stored. You may already know this but their is a functional test for the CEL circuit during the smog test. The light must come on when the key is in the on position and go out after the vehicle is started. If it remains lit you just failed. You will need to get to the bottom of that issue before you spend any coin. Like I said, take it to a competent Volvo technician and since there are issues with the CEL I recommend seeing the dealer. I know, I know, going to the dealer sucks but what can I tell you?

I had a canadian car here in the US. I think the most annoying thing was constantly explaining the mileage (converted from km) to dealers, tire manufacturers etc. Otherwise I just got used to doing the math in my head.

Are you really worried about resale value? If you're buying a car with 170,000 miles are you really planning on re-selling it?

    Hi,
No problem with the odometer reading - Carfax probably just lists reading
in Miles only. If the speedo is registered in kph then the odometer is also
registering km's. Rule of thumb is 80 km = 50 miles.
