Climate control continues to blink V70-XC70 1998

OK..for the last 18 months or so about once every 4 months my 2 indicator lights would blink for the fresh air and A/C buttons, it would do it for about 3 days........the fan would not speed up on heat or A/C and then after the 3 days it would reset and alllll would be fine for another 4 months. Well..now its been blinking on every start-up for the last 2 weeks and the only way to have the fan speed up is manually putting switches for the fan speed or the temp up to max, otherwise the fan stays on "low"! What could be wrong in the system that I could fix? Would an OBD II scan pick up anything??

Yes, but first I would inspect the cabin temperature sensor.

For LHD cars if you look to the left of the EEC contols next to the rear screen heater switch you will see a small grill.

If you get a torch and look inside the grile you should see a thermocoule (thin wire with a bead on it) and a small fan behind it. You should see the fan move when the main blower is running.

This sensor gets clogged up with fluff and the fan can't turn causing the flashing lights.

You can try cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner of better still remove the sensor to clean it and lightly lubricate the fan bearing. To get to it you need to remove the radio, EEC unit, and the heated screen switch.

If you want to read the yourself codes try this:

VOBD..your the best!!!!!!!!!!!!! V70-XC70 1998

Sure enough.......I went out to my car tonight with my "flashlight" (If I used a "torch" as you described I would have had a bunch of melted plastic) and looked inside that little grill..........I'll be darn but sure enough there looked to be a bunch of dust in there and nothing moving. I got out my trusty "shop vac".........sucked that baby clean.....got back out my flashlight....started the car and YES....there now was a little fan spinning and the ECC lights DO NOT BLINK!!!! VOBD...your the best and saved me a $90 diagnostic charge. Where are you from??
