1) test drive car - listen for all the rattles especially in front steering gear
2) when were all belts replaced? should be every 70,000 miles
3) check fan, check a/c (850 a/c often faulty - costs $1500 to $3500 to fix)
4) if alloy wheels, check for dings in rims that cause tires to have slow leak
5) best to have a good mechanic put car up on hoist and give it a good look over
5) go to e-bay, see what similiar volvos are selling for

You might look for a 1995 or later, as they are generally considered the best, more reliable, versions. I have seen several in my area of those years with less than 100,00 miles. Prices of $5,000 to $9,000.

Thank you for the responses. An incredible amount of helpful information.
I have an '89 740 t that i really like. However it doesn't have airbags.
The car i'm looking at 1993 850 glt w/ 160,000 miles is going for $4000 USD. I haven't looked at it yet But the ad says it needs tlc. Thats not good. I'm up in the air about it at the moment.

Eric,
If you really like that car I would NOT pay $4000 for it. I just bought the same year 850 for the same price, but mine had 90000 miles on it. (Though I just had extensive work done on the tranny). Before you drop that amount of cash on buying the car, take the car to a REPUTABLE VOLVO mechanic and pay the $100 or so that it takes him to thoroughly look over the car and assess what work it will need in the near future. Doing this may alert you to work the car will need in the future WHICH WILL BE EXPENSIVE. The peace of mind will be well worth the $100-200 you spend. Good luck.

dear eric,
i paid 4000.00$ for the 1994 850 wagon, and my indie volvo mechanic said after thoroughly looking it over that it was a fair asking price...

hi--
i've a 1994 850 wagon with 125000 miles. no major problems although i've had it only a few months and it was WELL cared for- only an oil return line leak and loose radiator clamps... my aunt wants it as soon as i find a stick/different model... anyway, here is what i have learned either from my mechanic, or this board...
get the wagon up on a lift to inspect for leaks- around the turbo and seals.
see when the timing belt was last changed (these should be replaced at 70,000 miles and mine has a sticker when it was last changed, so i add 70,000 miles to that number).
check all the fluids for the colour- oil and transmission and brake fluid... they should all be normal colours, and within the proper filling ranges. i'd recommend having the oil changed, coolant flushed, brake and transmission fluids flushed right away if you do get the car...
look over the hoses, air filter, and check to see battery is in place (mine was loose there's grooves it fits into).
drive it like it's yours and see how it handles/shifts and brakes, et cetera...
these are the things i can suggest to you, but i'm learning a lot myself here as there are some GREAT people willing to help =)
i'm sure you will get more responses addressing stuff i don't know...
good luck to you with the car!
best,
belle

Depending on the year.
1. Rear main seal. (usually they go around 140k ) so this may already have been replaced.
2. Tranny failure. Worst in 93 better in 94 onwards.
3. A/c evaporator. Big job as the dash board has to come out. Can cost
2k.
4. I have heard that on 96 the ABS modules is also a problem, but not sure
of the cost.
By the way if I may ask what year and model is the car and what is the asking price. ?

I've been told the following go out on most 850's, built 1995 or earlier. Lord knows, they've all gone out on mine:
1) ABS sensor. It may be an intermittant light, so take it for a lonnnnnng drive.
2) Oxygen sensors need to be replaced about every 60K
3) Rear main seal. Pricey to fix, and not a do-it-yourself job.
4) The clip-things that hold the engine in place sometimes break, will sound like a little vibration up front. Sounds serious. Isn't. Only about $40 to fix.
5) Main computer. Usually lasts until at least 150K. But my next door neighbor just had to replace her wagon's at 125K. Mine is suspect at 140K.
6) Timing belts are expensive to replace. Must be done every 70K miles. Don't mess with this one and put it off. Dire consequences with skipping it. If there isn't documentation that it's been done, then have it done yourself, regardless of miles on the car.
These babies aren't cheap to keep running. Know you'll spend a fortune. But you'll be in a safe car. :)

While we're on the subject:
I just bought a 94 turboized loaded (no winter pkg) 850 wagon w/94K on it for $7K.
Was this a good deal?
thanks!
