hi--
i've a 1994 850 wagon with 125000 miles. no major problems although i've had it only a few months and it was WELL cared for- only an oil return line leak and loose radiator clamps... my aunt wants it as soon as i find a stick/different model... anyway, here is what i have learned either from my mechanic, or this board...
get the wagon up on a lift to inspect for leaks- around the turbo and seals.
see when the timing belt was last changed (these should be replaced at 70,000 miles and mine has a sticker when it was last changed, so i add 70,000 miles to that number).
check all the fluids for the colour- oil and transmission and brake fluid... they should all be normal colours, and within the proper filling ranges. i'd recommend having the oil changed, coolant flushed, brake and transmission fluids flushed right away if you do get the car...
look over the hoses, air filter, and check to see battery is in place (mine was loose there's grooves it fits into).
drive it like it's yours and see how it handles/shifts and brakes, et cetera...
these are the things i can suggest to you, but i'm learning a lot myself here as there are some GREAT people willing to help =)
i'm sure you will get more responses addressing stuff i don't know...
good luck to you with the car!
best,
belle
