V70 Timing Belt Change V70-XC70

My owners manual for for my 2000 V70 (non-turbo) recommends changing the timing belt at 105,000 miles. This is much longer than the 50-60K interval I'm used to with older volvo models. Has anyone seen any problems letting this go to 105K?

    Thanks for the thread. The consensus is obviously not to push your luck on this one. Makes sense to me. I've done many timing belts on 240s with B23 engines. Is this procedure significantly more complicated on 5cyl V70 engine? Is this not a do-it-yourselfer, even for a fair skilled person?
    Also, I note IPD sells a special tool to assist with changing the serpentine belt. Is this tool really necessary?? Any tips on this?

      V70 Timing Belt Change 850 1995

      I bought and used the tool from IPD to replace the Serp. belt. It worked great. The only thing to do the Serp. belt is that the space is tight, just be patient to take out the old belt and to put in the new belt. It took me about 30 minutes to change the belt for the very 1st time in my 850.

      I haven't tried to do the timing belt because I don't have the gut to do it yet.

      My understanding is the mechanical tensioner is not a DIY item.
      You have to take into account air temperature when setting it
      as an example of something that makes it a litle "different".

      The timing belt cover comes off with one bolt. It is pretty
      easy to take it off and do a visual inspection of the belt.
      It comes off without having to remove any other parts (well,
      it does on my 95 and 98).

      I did purchase the IPD serpentine tool but I have an 850 and an
      S70 (also did the timing belts on those). So for me, the tools
      are worth the cost.

        Ray,
        Did you say you did do the timing belts yourself? If so, how complex was it. Did you have a manual of some type? If so, which would you recommend? I've tackled everthing short of an automatic transimission, but I do find these newer generation Volvo's a little intimidating. Any additional suggestions would be very appreciated.

      Heres my experience................. V70-XC70

      My 98 V70R has the "mechanical" fixed tensioner that says it will last 105K
      on the 99 models as my 98 manual indicates 70K. I verified at 70K and took the cover off and I do have the fixed tensioner. The belt looked almost new with no cracks...........I am now at 100K miles and will be bringing it in at 105K for the belt/tensioner idler and pump. I only want to spend the 5-600 dollars once!
      If you have the mechanical fixed tensioner.......105K should be fine as indiacted.

        Masher,

        I agree with you 200%, about taking the t-belt change to 105K miles on a late '98 V70 with the manual tensioner.

        The mood on this board sometimes is to scare people to "change it at 60K" just to play safe, etc.

        I will be taking my late '98 with mechanical tensioner to 95K miles before replacement, I am not as brave as you are going to 105K. I guess everything depends on one's "confort level", and for me is 95K miles.
