'94 855T Turbo leaking oil 850

has 91k. I posted about a week or 2 ago about a loss of power, and the cause was a huge hole in the main air intake hose. Got it fixed, but there's a quite a bit of oil in the old hoses from the turbo leaking. Have a new mechanic and he said the cause was the oil leak. Quoted $1500 for the fix. I'm gonna check FCP Groton for their price on a new turbo unit and try and save some cash...if I want to get this fixed right away. Kinda hurt on $ from the holidays.
Any advice? Can this wait a few months, or once the turbo starts leaking oil, do you want to get it fixed right away. Car is running very nicely, turbo is kickin'.
Thanks,
Nick

My sisters 850t was leaking oil from the oil return pipe/hose. Easy fix. FCP had the gasket and o ring for a total of $2.00 or so. Local volvo indy shop was going to charge 60 for parts and labor...HA...thanks volvospeed!

o-ring part# 1397775
gasket part# 3514546

NJA,
How severe is the oil leak and is it contained in the hoses? Tell you why. Ray N. is correct as there is oil collection in the hoses to a certain extent. Also, there is a chronic turbo line leak which IPDUSA.com sells a gasket kit for the turbo drain pipe seal. (http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=471&NodeID=179&RootID=629) Sells for $8.50 plus shipping. I ordered one for my 1998 Cross Country. They are a challenge to replace, although it depends on skill/expertise. A decent mechanic should be able to do it in a half hour. Reference to this can be found on Volvospeed.com in the maintenance section. All the specifics are detailed. If the car is running fine after your repair of the intake, why would the mechanic say the turbo leak was the problem? I personally have never heard of anyone replacing a turbo-charger. Of course I don't know everyone. lol In any event, there are better deals than $1500 of your hard earned money.

Barry

The leak is confined to the hoses, and no blue smoke from the exhaust. I just moved to Glenwood Springs, CO from Chicago where I had a great shop, Hubbard Woods Motors. There are no recommended shops within 3 hours of me, so I'm taking it to a place called Swedish Automotive And Beyond (SAAB), which is here in Glenwood and the only shop within hours that even advertises that it works on Volvos. I'm sure the guy is just trying to get cash out of me for putting in an unnecessary new turbo. I do not trust them at all, but it's all I got.
Thanks for responding and saving me a huge chunk of change.
Non-mechanical folks like me very much appreciate having a resource like this.

It is normal to have oil accumulated in the hoses. The intercooler
even has a hole drilled in the bottom to blow the extra oil out of
when the engine goes to boost (drop the black front lower spoiler
to see it -- it will be an oily mess under there).

I doubt the turbo is leaking oil to any degree that is a problem
unless you see lots of blue smoke out of the exhaust.

Turbo failures are actually quite rare.

yeah - what he said-

turbo units really dont go bad unless they have a really high milage condition or the person driving cooked the bearings by not allowing the turbo to cool a bit after "spirited" driving before shutting it off. If you allow a bit of time to let the turbo stop glowing and dont have a ton of miles your car should be ok - just mabey has a misalighned gasket or a leaky one- those problems are very common-
