Addition of Heated Seats: Can I do it myself? S80

I have been in contact with a fine gentleman by the name of Rich Kelley, who has supplied me with a parts list for the installation of heated seats in a 2000 S80 T6 that came without them. It is as follows:

9168282 Push button seat heater left $6.84
9442462 Push button seat heater right $10.69
8686606 Back heater grid, you would need two $65.83
8619430 Bottom heater grid, you would need two $56.24
9442947 Control module for heating grids you need two $116.40
9194292 wiring harness, you need two $15.21
8651378 Software down load application $25.00

He went on to say that his shop would require eight hours of labor for installation. Although the price for the parts seems reasonable, $720 just for the installation puts it far out of my reach. I was wondering if it would be possible to do this installation myself. I am assuming that the removal/disassembly/reassembly of the seats would be the most formidable task. I am also aware that I would have to have a Volvo Dealership perform the software installation.

Would any of you guys have the instructions on hand for what I would need to do to install this? I know that for the first two parts, I would simply pry out the plug on the ECC and insert the buttons. I would also need to put a fuse in the fuse cluster in the appropriate place.

Therefore, I need instructions on removing and disassembling the seats for the installation of the heater grids and the control module, and instructions on installing these parts properly. I also need help with where the wiring harnesses go.

If you guys would be kind enough to provide me with instructions as listed above, I would be most greatful. I would like to do a partial disassembly of the seats to make sure it is within my ability, and scope out where everything goes before I order $500 worth of parts.

One final question: would I be able to just purchase half of the parts, and do one seat only? Or would this confuse the software and cause problems? This car is under warranty and I don't want to do anything that could jeporadize that.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Scott

Addition of Heated Seats: Can I do it myself? S80

I figured out some more things last night. I removed one of the seats. It's simple - you just unplug the wires, and remove two T40 bolts in the end of each rail. The whole thing lifts right out.

Anyway, the leather is held to the frame with small 'hog rings'. You simply cut the rings and it will come apart. It seems as though it will be easy to install the heating grids assuming that I have instructions on how the grids and the controller are mounted. Mr. Kelley says he will send me instructions. I have had trouble finding the 'hog rings' to close the seat back up, so I just used some plastic cable ties (zip ties). They seem to work just as well.

So, I think I'm going to go in and order the parts tomorrow. If it all goes together well, I'm going to post a pictorial guide on my website. I'll post a link when it's done. It will probably be next weekend before I even get around to it, though.

Addition of Heated Seats: Go aftermarket S80

I know that there are shops, like perhaps trim/upholstery or auto excessory type shops that install aftermarket heated seat kits as our sales department has subletted cars out for that (like rear seat heaters). It'd be cheaper and easier than trying all that yourself and upholstery work is no fun unless you have prior experience and like doing that sort of thing.

and note... S80

Whoever does it needs to be VERY carefull of the SIPS bags and related wiring or you'll create new problems that won't be covered by warranty. I've seen that happen before from prior upholstery shop "work" and things can get very costly.

Someone is selling "universal" kits on eBay, looks like they're selling for around $150, including switches.

Well, I went ahead and did it. The parts came in today, and I installed everything. There's just a little box that bolts on the carrier underneath the seats that is the control module, the two buttons to replace the blank with on the climate control module, and the wiring harness. You might know that on the plugs underneath the seat, there is one plug that uses heavy-guage wire. It just doesn't connect to anything on the seat. The wiring harness replaces that plug and connects the control module to that cable. Pretty neat modular design.

I took the seats apart, and the grids are self-stick and apply to the foam. Everything was simple, it just took an immense amount of time to disassemble/reassemble the seats. I don't even know if it works, though, as the software that enables the switches on the climate control won't be installed until Tuesday afternoon. I'll report back.

All in all, it costs $510 for the parts, and the software will be $25 plus whatever labor is required.
