Front Struts - Have to replace both? 850 1995

I have a '95 850 Turbo, and my front strut is gone. It makes this terrible clunking noise, and you can turn the mount around with your hand. Do you have to replace both struts together, or can you replace 1 at a time? i have a lot of miles on this (160,000) and still owe a lot, so I only want to do as much as I need to to keep it alive until I have paid it off enough to what it is worth.

Front Struts - Have to replace both? 850 1995

Our 850 GLT wagon just got fresh HD Bilsteins at 87k. The original OEMs were shot. How do I know? When I disassembled the front strut/spring unit the shocks piston rod recessed into the strut body from gravity!? Replace both now with the spring seats or replace a whole bunch of other stuff as well later on. i.e. A-arm bushings, anti-sway bar stuff, blah blah blah. The longer we wait the more expensive it gets.

Definitatly change both if you do the struts. think about the handleing mess it would cause 1 new strut and 1 worn out strut. sounds bad to me. Tire Wear?

Front Struts - OK to Replace only the Bad One 850 1995

OK to replace just one strut.

I had the right strut fail at 39K miles and dealer replaced only the one(at my objection) under warranty.

Now at 71K miles - no noticeable handling issues at all. Same crappy 850 ride that we all live with.

In any case, it sounds more like your strut spring retainer ($26 part for each side ) is the culprit. This is a very common 850 problem.

Front Struts - What parts make up the mount? 850 1995

I am going to try the mount first, and see what happens from there.

Checking IPD and most online places, they sell a mount kit. The dealer only had a mounting plate and some kind of gasket (actually, I thought he said "basket" but I think I really misunderstood what he said!). Is that all that is in the mount kits? I have not attempted a Shock job on a Volvo, but I have some help doing it.

One more person who says that mount should be replaced and not strut - especially on a budget.

When replacing strut you should also replace mount anyway, so if it turns out you still need structs (sorry I say do them both not just 1) you can if mount replacement fails to fix problem.

I don't think it is your strut .. it is your "spring cup" that gone when the spring cup broke you can turn the whole thing like mine I just replace it 6 month ago... "spring seat " cost $25..

no new sturt is needed.. save your $$$$$$$$$$$$$

when I put on the new "spring cup" it nolonger turn .. every thing inplace...

You can do them 1 at a time but I would advise against it.
