Inner door handle inoperative C70 2007

I was riding along with a prospective buyer in the C70 (he passed on the car for other reasons) and discovered when I tried to get out that the inside passenger door handle doesn’t work. Feels normal, just doesn’t unlatch the door. I’m hoping that the cable fell off and can be remedied by just removing the panel and not gutting the door. Anyone have this happen?

Interior door handle fixed. Not a lot of info on these models on line. Found a similar model on YouTube and gave it a shot.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

Remove the plastic "airbag" badge at the upper middle and the rectangular plastic cover at the upper rear of the door (passenger door. Upper right on driver's door) Both of these covers pop off with a bone tool and reveal torx bolt.

Bone tool again to pop out the inner door grip, just to the rear of the window switches. Another torx revealed. Then pop out the panel with the window switch and disconnect the plug.

Bone tool again, pry just behind the window vent at the leading edge of the window. Snaps will release. Then the rest is prying the panel from the rear to the bottom to the front. Lot's of plastic snaps. Last is at the top edge. It doesn't lift off but there are more snaps.

The panel is free. The wiring for the speakers doesn't need to be bothered. I found that the cable from the inner door handle to the lock had simply fallen off. Slipped the ball end back into it's place, added a little safety wire to keep it from popping out again and reversed the process.

The plastic that the cable slides over probably disintegrated, stupid Volvo 'green' plastic!

Look at this and go to the Sweedspeed link for door panel removal:

Klaus,
Thanks. What precautions should be taken with the door panel airbag when removing the panel? I'll have the battery disconnected of course.

Don't hit it with a hammer? I didn't think there was an air bag in the door panel, but now that you mention it, the C70 couldn't have a "curtain" air bag defending from the roof.

So long as the battery is disconnected, the airbag should not present a problem. My worry is always the brittle plastic clips. A flat pry bar around the clip usually works.

Klaus,

Having wrestled with the headliner that refuses to stay put in the three-piece roof, I can attest that there is no side curtain airbag in the roof. Volvo's nod to environmentalism with their 7 year adhesives has shown itself in three of our cars.

If there is a side curtain airbag, it's in the door or corner of the dash. If I take this on I'll confirm. It's been a few weeks since I even moved the car due to work being very busy. I'm ready to drop it at a body shop for minor bodywork and have them fix the handle.

Next job is replacing the sunroof seal on my wife's V70 3.2.

Thanks!

Erwin

My experience with sun roofs stop with the 2000 model. The felt is glued to a metal frame which is glued to the glass. The 850's have rusted metal which allowed copious amounts of water to travel between the metal and glass. The felt is not waterproof, but keeps most of the water at bay. Replacing the metal is a real pain - it is much easier to find a better sun roof glass in a pick&pull and throw away the old one. My P&P charged me $20 for the glass and that stopped all of the leaks.

The newer cars had problems where the drain tubes joined, they would come apart and flood the floor. That means removing the A pillar cover.

My 1998 had a leak problem where water would get into the dome light and drip down from there. I had originally suspected the sunroof, but it turned out to be the seal at the top of the windshield. It really only leaked when driven in the rain, not when parked.
