Trying to buy a new Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator - Can't find it anywhere 850

Hello All,

I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon, non-turbo with a 5 speed manual. The Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator (Volvo Part # 1275773) has gone bad and Volvo doesn't sell it anymore. The Bosch part number for this part is #0280161504.

I may be able to find a used one, but I have been advised by my mechanic, that if these regulators are allowed to "dry out" that is, they are not immersed in gasoline, the internal diaphragm begins to dry out and become fragile and could fail. But if I can't fine a new one, I may have to take that risk.

Can anyone suggest where I could find a new regulator? Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

Trying to buy a new Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator - Can't find it anywhere 850

Hello All,

I wanted you to know I was successful in finding two used Bosch Fuel Pressure Dampers from a salvage yard in CA on Friday. I ordered two. One for my Silver 1996 850 GLT wagon that needs a replacement damper and one in advance for my Red 1996 850 GLT wagon, which doesn't for the moment. Before I go further, I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond and share their advice. Your help explains why I keep coming back to this website when a problem arises with one of my Volvos. Your help and interest, in my opinion exemplifies the kinship of Volvo owners, which I think is unique. I also want to say, that I called all the vendors listed in the back of Rolling related to Volvo parts and services. Rolling is the magazine of the Volvo Club of America. A quick disclosure: I am on the Board of Directors of the Volvo Club and serve as the Club's General Counsel and I am a member of the VCOA. Anyway, I called all the vendors, and one of them, although they did not have the damper I was looking for, gave me the names of 4 shops/salvage yards that might have it, and one of them proved successful.

I obtained the damper I had been search for days from:

Volvo, Saab, BMW, Mini Cooper Auto Dismantlers
3539 Recycle Road
Rancho Cordova, CA. 95742
Phone: 916-635-9970
Toll Free: 800-700-8658
Text: 916-718-9273

The fellow who answered the phone and helped me was named Kenny Dugdale. He was very helpful. He took my information and I texted him a picture of the damper I was looking for. He went out into the yard, and found two correct dampers for me. He took pictures of them and texted them to me. I purchased two and their price was very reasonable. I asked Kenny if he had anymore dampers left, or had I purchased them all? He said he has a few left. So if anyone needs a fuel pressure damper for a '96-97 850 non-turbo, I hope the information above saves you the time and frustration I experienced. I want to add, I have no private or financial interest to the above salvage yard. I share this information in case if can help someone else.

Again, thank you collectively for your help.

Hugh

Trying to buy a new Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator - Can't find it anywhere 850

Hello All,

Some more good news. I mentioned above I got two used fuel pressure dampers from Volvo, Saab, BMW, Mini Cooper Dismantlers. My private mechanic called me yesterday. Both dampers worked, so he installed one and put the other aside. I purchased two dampers because: in case one was bad and because I have another 850 wagon of similar age and mileage and it too may need a replacement damper someday.

I am pleased with this development, because I knew I was taking a chance purchasing a used damper. It would be 20 years old and is made of rubber that has been drying out, no longer immersed in gasoline. I lucked out. First in the advice you all shared and secondly in finding two good used samples. With the lack of difficulty in starting my Volvo that has plagued me for over a year, I feel like I am driving a "New Car". For now anyway.

Hugh

JWalker,

Thank you for your kind words. If my experience can spare someone the headaches and frustrations I had to slog through, then "Hooray". Besides, I personally feel an obligation. It is a small way to "give back" for the help and advice that others shared that helped direct me to a solution.

Over the years, I have gotten great advice from members of this community, especially from Klaus, who in my opinion is a wealth of Volvo information.

Everyone stay safe and well!

Hugh

Look at Robert DYI on you tube and get his contact info, he makes several runs at different junk yards on the country.

the part you listed(0280161504) is a damper, not a fuel pressure regulator. Two different things.

The damper regulates the pulses from the fuel pump at high rpm.

The fuel pressure regulator has 3 openings: 1 for the vacuum line, 1 for the fuel going to the rail, 1 for the excess fuel to go back to the tank.

You will find it not at the fuel rail, but near the fuel filter. Right rear wheel area.

Trying to buy a new Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator - Can't find it anywhere 850 1996

Hello Klaus,

You are right as usual. My private garage called the part I needed a "Fuel Pressure Regulator" and provided me with the Volvo Part # and the Bosch Part #. That is why I have been using that terminology. As I conducted my search, using those two part numbers, I saw part I was seeking was described as a "Bosch Fuel Pressure Damper". I assumed that "Regulator" and "Damper" were interchangeable terms. The part I need attaches to the fuel rail that sits on top of the engine. It was pointed out to me by my mechanic. It only has two openings: one on tope of canister of the "Damper", which I think a vacuum hose attaches to, and another opening that is perpendicular to the side of the damper that has a protrusion with a rubber gasket around it. It is I believe it slides into an opening on the fuel rail, and is secured in place by two bolts, one on each side of this protrusion or tube.

The bottom of this particular damper is closed off. I have been able to find dampers with two two extensions on opposite ends of the damper canister. The part number (Bosch
30280160554) is similar but different to the damper I need (Bosch # 0280161504).

I am still looking. I even contacted Nordicar in the Netherlands to no avail. I'm calling salvage yards across the country. Apparently Bosch stopped making this damper in January of 2017. Lucky me. If I find a source, I am going to buy two dampers, because I have another 1996 850 GLT wagon, non-turbo with a 5 speed manual that has even more miles than the car I am presently search for now. I may never use it, but I don't want to go through this ordeal again.

Klaus thank you for your reply.

Hugh

Hugh

Jim,

I did, and they did not have a damper that would fit my car. I sent them a picture of the unit I am looking for, and they went out to the warehouse, and it did not match. I am still hoping to find NOS somewhere, but my hopes are dimming.
If I find a used one, it will be 20 years old and possibly the diaphragm will be dried out, but I don't seem to have much choice. From my inquiries, it appears Bosch stopped making the type of damper I need back in January of 2017.

I have a list of about 20 Volvo salvage yards scatter throughout the country. I will call them tomorrow and see if I get lucky. It is very frustrating.

Thank you for your suggestion though.

Hugh

3 ideas come to mind for a replacement to your problem:

1. If might still be available in Europe

2. can you change the fuel rail to an open return that can used the normal regulator.

3. My 98 S70 has a close fuel rail and the regulator sits on the line under passenger side, it is a regulator and fuel return in the same gizmo.

hf63,

Thank you for your reply. With regard to your suggestions:

1) I am exchanging emails with a company called "Nordicar" which is based in the Netherlands. It has an ad in the back of Rolling, the magazine of the Volvo Club of America. They are looking for me now, but the price, based upon my rough calculation from euros to dollars will be nearly $200 about 4 times the cost if the part was available in the U.S. as an aftermarket part and I don't even know what the shipping cost would be.

2) I asked my mechanic if I could "convert to a universal regulator" and he said "No".

3) My 1996 850 non-turbo has the regulator in the same location as your 1998 S70.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. This is such a headache. It would kill me if a part that retailed (from a Volvo dealer) for just over $100 would prevent me from continuing to enjoy driving my car. I am just dumbfounded by the dearth of substitute regulators or even regulators designed to fit my car.

Hugh

This is interesting, the attachment probably has a way for the fuel to return back to the tank. I wonder if you can install a normal regulator and cut into the fuel return side of the the gadget/ not sure what to call it.

Try Autozone:

https://www.autozone.com/fuel-delivery/fuel-pressure-regulator/gp-sorensen-fuel-pressure-regulator-800-521/203350_677026_0

Take a close look at yours to make sure it looks the same as the one in the picture. I assume that the engine is currently hard to start and produces a little blue smoke at start up. Plus the vacuum line from the FPR is wet from gasoline.

Klaus,

I saw that listing too. The regulator listed at AutoZone does not fit my car. It has two openings, and mine only has one. I think that is because mine is used for a "Non-return fuel system". The shape of the canister shown in the AutoZone ad is identical to mine, except it has two openings or ports/tubes, and mine only has one attached to the upper part of the regulator.

I have looked everywhere:iPd, FCPGroton, eEuroparts, AutoZone, Adance Auto, NAPA and RockAuto. I have Googled both the Volvo part number and the Bosch number to no avail.

Trying to buy a new Bosch Fuel Pressure Regulator - Can't find it anywhere 850

Klaus,

Thank you for your help. I looked at that regulator, and mine is almost identical, but it is different. Mine does not have an extension on the bottom. It only has one extension or tube, whereas the one that is displayed in the AutoZone ad has two. The regulator for my car is for a "Non-Return Fuel System". I can find plenty of the regulators described in the AutoZone ad, with the two extensions/tubes, but none like the one on my car.

There is a website called "new-part.com" which I thought had the correct picture of my regulator (one stem/tube) but it was out of stock. I have confirmed the Volvo Part Number and the Bosch Part number. Of the two, I am putting more faith in terms of finding this regulator using the Bosch part number. I have spent days and days and hours and hours scouring the internet trying to find this regulator. I have asked my private mechanic if a "universal" regulator could be installed and he said "no". It kills me that a part that retailed for just over $100 may preventing me from getting my car fixed. I can still drive my car, I have to crank it 3 times before it starts, and then the engine "stumbles" for a few minutes. My mechanic tells me the regulator is flooding the engine with gas. Of course, that hurts gas mileage, dumps excess gas into the cylinders diluting the oil on the cylinder walls, and polluting the crank case. I am also pretty sure it doesn't help the catalytic converter either.

It has been very frustrating, every time I think I have a good lead on regulator, when I see what it actually looks like, is always the version with two stems/tubes. That's why I am hoping some here on Brickboard, has experienced the same problem and found a source. As I mentioned, I am not keen about buying a used regulator, but I may be forced to do so.

Again, any help that you or others to this website can provide, I would be thankful for. It is very frustrating.

Hugh

Call a junkyard close to you. If they have an 850. A used one is better than what you have. Besides, it is a 5 minute replace.
