Rough-running start up

2000 V70 SE, 268K miles, AW-5, Denso

Car has developed a symptom of rough running immediately after cold start. Severity seems to be proportional to how long the car sits unused.

After one day of sitting cold (mild climate), it's a minor startup shake. But yesterday, after sitting 10 days, the engine shook and vibrated so much I was watching for the CEL to illuminate; which it did not. Rough running clears up in 30 seconds at cold idle and runs OK for rest of the day.

Car has a history of #3 coil misfire, which was tracked down to a bad coil receptacle housing and wire terminal. There have been no #3 misfire symptoms for about one year now. When chasing that misfire problem, the Indy tech said I was using the wrong plugs (NGK copper core) and replaced ($$) with NGK platinum plugs. Those platinum plugs have 13K miles on them now.

My first thought is replace with new plugs, back to copper core, and see if this clears up. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Copper core are the required spark plugs.

I would get a compression test, fuel pressure reading when cold. I assume that the engine starts quickly enough to rule out a compression problem on at least 4 cylinders, but if fuel pressure stays low...

Try priming the fuel pressure by turning the key to position II several times before engaging the starter.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Thanks I’ll try the ignition key procedure. Low fuel pressure could be due to weak fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, or _____?

Will also install new copper plugs.

      Will report back.

Good plan. I’m guessing the fuel filter has been changed. Are the pump and regulator original? If so, with the mileage on your car one of them could very well be the problem.

Car has been cold-started four mornings in a row and engine is smooth after installing new OEM Volvo three-electrode plugs (B5244S NA engine). Haven’t tried the key to position II on/off procedure yet; but may be not necessary after five new plugs. Might be too early to draw conclusions, but so far so good.
