Sway bar end links 850

My 1995 855T has lived in the rust belt for a long time. How do I get the end links off? These are the type that have a T30 hole in the end to keep the threaded part from rotating.

I PBblasted the nut and threads. The nut does turn with a lot of effort, but so do the threads. The T30 doesn't penetrate very far and will not hold enough torque to get the nut free.

What now, heat? Easy to do on the top nut, but the lower nut??? I don't need to burn the garage down. Besides, I loose all leverage when laying on the floor.

BTW, the IPD heavy duty end links have a 16mm slot to hold the link while the 15mm nut is tightened. But my 16mm wrench is twice as thick as the slot. How in the heck is one supposed to tighten down the 15mm???? Make my own 16mm from bar stock? Some engineers need to have their heads examined.

My new to me Volvo only garage quoted $120 to replace the end links. I may have to go there in a couple of years.

When I did mine I cut the boots off with a utility knife, wiped out the grease and used vice grips on the shaft while using an electric impact gun on the nut. That made the job easy! Here in the Canadian rust belt, the torx t30s were rusted and stripped instantly.

You might find one of these to be very helpful in cutting off rusted bolts and nuts:

I bought one a few years ago along with a stack of 4” cutting wheels (equally as cheap) and have found it to be quite handy. Wear thick gloves when using as I found it cuts through skin REALLY fast.

As for the need for a thin wrench, you may need to sacrifice an old 16mm (or maybe even a 5/8”???) and grind it down to fit.

That's cheaper than renting a Sawsall.

I have an Email to IPD asking about their 'quality control'. And who the idiot was that designed it!

Perhaps I should just wait until I need new struts. But, winter is coming early and the garage will get a bit nippy and cold fingers are not fun.
