06 XC70 T5 P0016 and P0017 post timing belt change plus occ oil light V70-XC70 2006

Car ran fine at 99,973 miles, then timing belt, tb tensioner, tb roller, aux belt, aux belt tensioner, coolant flush, oil change, oil filter change, 6 quarts 10W30 Castrol. Oil and Coolant levels are perfect.

Now for the first problem. The car runs great, even more acceleration than normal at lower RPMS. No CEL pops up while running or driving. After shutting down the engine and restarting I get the P0016 (Crank / cam correllation sensor bank 1 Sensor A. The P0017 is the same as P0016 bank 1 Sensor B, so only bank 1 is impacted. Also same CEL issue if kept at <3K RPMS. If I had to guess (if I ignore the second problem), the intake cam is one tooth too advanced as this would increase low end torque and cause the bank 1 sensor issues?.

The second is that while driving today 20 miles or so, no CEL, the engine oil light came on for about 2 minutes while driving and then it went off. Once again Oil level perfect, fresh OE filter. This issue has not reappeared. (I was NOT the driver).

NOTE: This car has VVT on intake and exhaust cams. I did not remove the cams.

Now for the questions. Is there a chance I got the timing belt intake gear off one notch (too advanced)? or could it be something else?

On the oil light, I'm thinking perhaps a loose wire to sensor, or.... Where is the best place to hook in the manual oil pressure gauge?

Bank 1 and 2 are for V8 engines, the straight 5 only has Bank 1.

Because you got 0016 and 0017 at the same time, it could be an issue with the CVVT solenoids being clogged. They require oil pressure to activate the CVT.

Are the codes now gone? Only the one time oil light? Are you using synthetic oil? When was the last time the engine revved up to 5500?

      Klaus,

5500 RPMs was quite some time ago, perhaps years! The Mobile 1 10W30 is full synthetic.

The oil light only came on once and the engine did not seem to be running in model T mode, it sounded normal. It has not come on again.

If I clear the 0016 and 0017, the CEL and the codes go away with engine not running. I start the engine and drive, or just let it sit idling, the CEL stays off. No codes to be found while running (no codes, no CEL)'

Turn the ignition off, turn the ignition back on, CEL shows 0016 and 0017 codes are back, even before starting the engine again. .

As a repeat, I did replace the timing belt before the codes showed up, no codes before that.

Car has 100K on it, oil has been changed religiously including filter. Being a 2006 with 100K miles on it you can tell it is not driven far or often and I swear I saw granny running faster than the car is driven:)

The only other issue the car had was 5K ago, CEL came on for bad fuel rail pressure sensor. Replaced sensor with Volvo part, reset code, car ran fine again With bad fuel pressure sensor, engine seemed to surge and drop out on occasion plus poor idle. Pretty sure this is not related to the above, just being thourough.

Time to pull the front wheel and check the timing marks, again. Sounds like you are off on both cams and not just the solenoid.

Look around on the WWW for proper alignment of the VVT's when the belt is off. You may need a bottle of white out.

When I had a cam out of time the CEL behaved the same as yours. If I cleared the code I could start the car and run it quite a while with no CEL. But as soon as I started it the second time the CEL would light up.

Another possibility is that, sense you're getting timing errors for BOTH intake and exhaust cams, the two cams are actually in proper sync with EACH OTHER, but both are out of sync with the crank. Each error code is describing a mismatch between that particular cam and the crankshaft, not a mismatch between the two cams.

      Oil light:

If the car is not used regularly that might occasionally set off the oil light. That happened with one of my 850's. Never did find out why it did it.
