ECM replacement in 2002 V70 V70-XC70 2002

Hi All,

I am looking at a good deal on a 2002 V70 (NA & FWD) which supposedly has a problem with the ECM. According to the dealer, he had a Volvo tech examine it and he concluded that it needs a new ECM. The car won't start - the engine is not turning over when the key is turned. I can get a re-manufactured ECM for a reasonable price but I am worried this is not the only problem. The car looks great otherwise - low miles.
Where in the car is the ECM located? Inside the passenger foot-well I saw a box that looks like a ECM hanging from the wires but somebody told that the ECM is located in the engine bay.
Thanks for any help
Henrik

    ECM replacement in 2002 V70 V70-XC70 2002

    Hi Henrik,

if the engine don't turns by turning the key, there is a simle way to check, if the starter would.
Just open the front fusebox near the airfilter, look for relais FMA4 (there is a sticker in the topcover of the box), remove it, Ignition off !!!, make absolutely sure to set the gearbox in neutral, take a short wire and connect the 2 bigger contacts in relaisholder at FMA4.
As soon as you get contact, the starter should work. don't hold it too long !!
If the starter is ok, the engine will turn now.
If the engine turns, switch ignition on, connect again, then the engine should start.
If the engine doesn't turn, look for the clamp 50 at the starter solenoid.
It's a known issue to the Plattform, just today i looked for a friends V70R, that won't start anymore.
The friendly stealer didn't find out, why.He searched for 2 days.....
He said, the ring antenna round the ignition-lock or the keys may be faulty.
There was no fault stored in the system.

I put off the wire from the solenoid, cleaned the connector, reconnected the wire (bit tricky) and at every keyturn the R roars :-)
It's just 10 Minutes to go.

By the way, there is no ECM, it is called CEM (Central Electronic Module) and you'll find it left side under the Dashboard.
And the CEM is programmed to the Chassis, only the dealer can program a blank CEM.
Used and not erased CEMs dealers can't program to another car with VIDA/VADIS.
And dealers can't erase a CEM with VIDA/VADIS
So you have to buy an erased CEM (used very hard to find) or a new one....

    Regards
    traebbe

      ECM replacement in 2002 V70 V70-XC70 2002

      Hello Traebbe,

Thank you very much. What you are telling me is basically a way to jump the starter from above, without messing with the starter directly, right? I will do that when I get the car(I haven't bought it yet). I take it you don't think the problem is the ECM or CEM. I did a little more research and found out that the part I was told is bad is really the CEM and not the ECM (which is in the right side of the engine bay-next to the transmission control unit).
Thanks for the info about the CEM being mated to the chassis. I saw on eBay a company that will re-program and pair a CEM to an ECM for this vehicle for $200. I think I will have to send them my units and they will send me a pair that is programmed together. Does that make sense?
I appreciate your help and will post again as soon as I get the car and get the starter tested as you describe.

      Thank you

      Henrik

The CEM allows communication between all of the computers in the car. It can keep the starter from functioning.

I can no longer look at the cost as my screen isn't wide enough to get the right hand side prices!! But a refurbished CEM will last for life, and no dealer programming is required. Something to look at.

I hope the car is cheap! As in real cheap. You don't know if there is anything else is wrong and how much it will cost to repair.

          Thanks Karl,

The price is $599 for the CEM refurbishing including shipping so that is not too bad IMO. I can get the car for $750 and it only has 123,000 miles on it - looks very clean and overall good shape. I think 2002 must have been the first year for the re-design and I am a bit worried about issues that may cause. But the investment is not that great I figure, so I may go for it.

          Thanks again

          Henrik

2001 is the first of the new. Before you buy it, pull the tranny dipstick and check the color and smell. If it is dark and smells burned, walk away!

The ETM should have been replaced and the better throttle modules have a yellow tag.

Is there a timing belt sticker? It should have been replaced at around 105K miles.

I know you can't drive it, so buyer beware.

        Hi Henrik,

yes, that's the way to test the starter without any tool, just a short wire with blank ends.
I'd to it first, if i were you, before giving 1 buck to the seller.
        It's just easy to do.
Also didn't heard, that the EngineControlModule (ECM) gets faulty.
When the engine turns at test, it will even run, when ignition is switched on for test. Perhaps not perfect for the Moment, but it will run.

I think really the prob is the acceleration wire at the starter solenoid.

Personally I wouldn't touch it unless you pay parts car prices.
        $500 or less... maybe.
