radio replacement with aftermarket radio 850 1996

The CD player in my factory radio is, it appears, shot. I've tried cleaning it, but discs fail to play after just an hour's playing following a cleaning.

Looking online, it seems there are lots of radios that will fit in the opening, but they're just regular 2" high radios. Do the installation kits delivered with these radios fill the remaining opening somehow? Is this a chance to build a CD storage unit in the unused space?

I replaced the double DIN with a single DIN a few years ago in my '95 854T.
I purchased the new radio and installation kit from Crutchfield.
    The installation was very easy.
The install kit came with an insert to fill the gap under the new radio.

The Volvos came with double DIN radios. Most after market radios are single DIN, you just don't need a lot of space to have a simple radio/CD player.

But the market has so many options! You can get just a radio/CD player which leaves an open slot below the radio to stash CD's. Or you can go full blown Bluetooth with Navigation!

Good radios come with wiring, and a 'box' for under the new radio. Most of the radios come with MP3 capability (younger people don't have CD's) and some come ready with Sirius. It is just the cost and installation time.

Take a look at Crutchfield, a reputable shop:

Crutchfield also sells wire harness adapters, yes?

So you can connect the wire harness from the radio to the power and speaker wire harness installed at the Volvo factory.

Volvo always seem to use such good quality conductor with durable insulation. Though people seem to rip out or by pass the whole factory stereo install with a replacement jerry-rigged harness.

I'm unsure, yet in some instances the Volvo stereo has a speaker level out, like to dash mount tweeters and midranges, and then line level out to a remote amp that power the speaker in the doors and rear hat shelf.

I'll guess the crutchfield outfit my car selector web page helps you with that, though. I'll take a look at it.
