thoughts / advice on upgrading from 940 to V70 V70-XC70 2001

I've been a RWD volvo owner now for 15 years and my sons current driver is a 1993 940 wagon, Regina, 350k miles. This has been just an amazing car and it still starts every day (0degrees this morning) and drives wonderfully.

24 midwest winters however are starting to show especially the bottoms of the doors, and the edges of the hood. I'm thinking come spring it will start to look pretty rough.

I got an email yesterday from my mom in Colorado saying her neighbor is selling their 1-owner 2001 V70 FWD wagon. 125,000 miles. Sweet leather interior. All service performed at Volvo its entire life. No rust whatsoever. She wants to get $1200 for the car.

I am quite attached to our 940, we've traveled the country in it, brought our babies home from the hospital in it. Lots of memories.

I can repair the 940 pretty much blindfolded, I have no idea what I'm getting into with the V70.

Look forward to thoughts on this dilemma. Will my 15" rims and snow tires from the 940 fit onto the V70??

Thanks,
Matt

    thoughts / advice on upgrading from 940 to V70 V70-XC70 2001

I went from a '92 945T to a 2000 V70 6 years ago, and I am very happy that I did-- it is one of the nicest cars I have ever owned. They are also very durable-- I see them for sale with 400K+ km on them all the time. You will need a code reader to keep it going-- trying to diagnose without one is basically just guessing.

Even knowing that the transmission is weak in the 2001 cars, I'd be tempted for $1200. Replace the B4 servo cover (~$30 for the part), flush with Toyota type IV fluid and then make sure you get the software update done on it. Shifting on mine improved dramatically with just the software update-- no more shift flares. Some people replace valve bodies on the 5 speed autos with good results if the rest of the car is in good shape.

I think the offset changed on the wheels around 2001 (my '92 RWD rims had the same bolt pattern, although I think the hub was bigger than on the V70).

    Good luck!

1 thing the 940 never needed and the 2001-up cars will need is programming. you be suprised what needs to be programmed after replacement. simple stuff like brakes and plugs won't, but replace a module-and there are lots-and it's a download from volvo NA. not an upgrade from the 940. good luck, chuck.

Not fun sounding, but time is marching on.

        Matt
        I had a 2001 v70 wagon
        No problems
Bought at 100k sold 3 years later @ approx 140 for $2 in real nice shape
I was 2nd owner and previous owner had all services at Volvo
Tranny's on the xc and v70 were always a negative factor but it worked for me
As said in previous post timing belt and water pump time
And for that price worth it Imho
        Good luck
        Pete

Your last question first, the 940 rims will not fit on the V70.

$1200 for a 125K mile car is pretty good, but it is a 2001(!) which is not known for reliability - first year of the 5 speed automatic. Of course there is no rust on a CO car, a nice dry climate compared to the upper midwest.

I would wait out winter and look for a 2004+ V70, preferably a 2007 with the 5 cyl engine, or a 2010 with the 6 cyl (much improved) XC70. Because your car still runs nicely, there is no hurry.

    OR,

You could buy the CO car and drive it home. If the tranny or the other new electronics fail, you won't be out much. Liability only insurance should be cheap.

Mechanically, totally different than the 1993! Everything is crammed in to the front of the car. Compared to BMW, MB, Audi, the V70 is easy to work on and the parts are reasonable. The 2001 should have had the Tbelt changed at around 100K, ask for documentation (the neighbor can ask for a printout of all service done by the dealer). It is a PLUS to have maintenance history.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

My previous volvo was 1990 740 regina.
I did my research and it was obvious the 2001 was one to avoid, I bought a 2004 V70 174K mi for $1975.
Too many problems with the early model, it was on the bleeding edge of technology. I would not touch it, yes they look great and rive great until...
