2007 V50 -- no fuel filter replacment? V50

Reading a maintenance schedule I see that certain 2007 V50 cars do not have a replaceable fuel filter. Is that true?

"If the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has the numbers 38; 39; 64 or 68 at the 6th and 7th numbers the filter is not replaceable."

My VIN 6th and 7th number starting from the left is
*****68

Last night my said the car threw a code. I checked it this morning and it was P0300. The car has close to 100,000 miles on it and I first thought possible fuel starvation for a moment from a gas filter issue.

If I have no fuel filter then that is out of the question.

Interesting, you should have also gotten additional codes P0301-5, pointing to specific cylinders.

Was your tank low on gas? The only time I ever got P0300 was when I ran out of gas - just as I was pulling up to the pump! Close call! A very low tank and driving up a long steep hill can also contribute to multiple misfires.

Correct about fuel filters. If you notice, the fuel pump has a sock filter at the base of it to trap particles (that's all Volvos), and with plastic tanks there is no corrosion to deal with.

Of course, if you get water when you fill up, filters won't do any good.

The sock filter comment isn't exactly true. On my 05 S60 w/metal tank, the pump, fuel filter and sending unit are an integrated unit. You can't replace just the filter, have to replace the entire unit (~200 - $300). I just replaced it and I'm going to tear it apart to see if the filter can be cleaned and replaced. The pump was replaced due to "whining", not due to a complete failure, which could very well have been due to a clogged filter rather than a failing pump.

Let us know what you find out about the filter on your pump. A picture would be nice...

Which reminds me that I need to order a new filter for the 855.

The car was low, not very low on gas and it had about an 1/8 of a tank remaining.

Well it was early in the morning, my wife was late for a meeting and I may not have noticed the other codes. But I think there was only one code, a P0300.
It would be great if it was a code that pointed toward one cylinder and then I could go checking.

This car has something odd going on and for a while I'll get a P02187 and sometimes she can go several hundred miles without setting the code. My wife says she sees the 2187 code going off when she is heading uphill on a certain entrance ramp. A place where she is making a sharp turn going uphill and giving gas.

The car idles well, gas mileage is what is to be expected, acceleration is what is to be expected, etc.

The tank has a somewhat deformed neck. The flap, the one that the pump nozzle pushes in when inserted into the neck is crooked and doesn't close like you normally see in other cars. There is always a gap. Sometimes I think it has to do with the gas cap not being able to fully seal due to the gap. Another tank would be a very expensive replacement for trial and error.

I am fairly certain my scan tool said one code.

The filler neck can be replaced, not cheap. The P02187 is a system lean, but you already know that. Check the PCV hose that goes to the top of the engine for cracks. Volvo had a recall on that hose, go to the web site and check the recall against your VIN.

A while ago I checked that PCV hose and the thing looks new. Plus it has a different connector from the OEM -- so I think the PO (leasing company) replaced it.

Before she left for work this morning I put my scan tool on to check for pending codes. Yep there was one P0301. So apparently the number 1 cylinder wasn't happen at some point.

I do wonder about that filler neck as a problem child?

That metal flapper in the filler neck is there if someone forgets to replace the cap and starts driving down the road. It would prevent a lot of gas from sloshing out. Other than that, it serves no known function.

Perhaps someone siphoned some gas out of the car and bent it trying to pull the hose out?

In any case, it has nothing to do with running lean. You might have a bad coil or two? It would be worth moving coil #1 to another cylinder and see if the code moves to the other cylinder.

Will do next week. tomorrow I leave on a small vacation and will be using the S60. The V50 will get a rest.

I would do it tonight but the turbo line over the top of the engine isn't a real quick removal. Not too bad but I don't feel like dealing with the hold down bolt positioned under the MAF.
