The sock filter comment isn't exactly true. On my 05 S60 w/metal tank, the pump, fuel filter and sending unit are an integrated unit. You can't replace just the filter, have to replace the entire unit (~200 - $300). I just replaced it and I'm going to tear it apart to see if the filter can be cleaned and replaced. The pump was replaced due to "whining", not due to a complete failure, which could very well have been due to a clogged filter rather than a failing pump.
