took apart new door stop piece...how to reassemble? 850

Hi -
I was on track to replace my drivers side door stop but ran into difficulty getting the new door stop into the door cavity - even trying to rotate it I couldn't figure out how to get the attached bolts past the sheet metal of the door.

Anyway, stupidly I started messing with the door stop itself and managed to separate the flat piece from the wheel/rollers and now I cannot get them back because of the pressure/force needed. One of the ends of the "carabiner" part is not where it should be and thus the whole thing is loose.

This is a very specific question since the stop comes pre-assembled and ready to operate. I'm thinking my option is really to order another door stop unless someone knows how to force the parts back together?

Thanks,
Andrew

How you managed to do that is beyond me! But I happened to have a rear passenger door (won't fit on the front door) and am looking at it.

The heavy spring is fitted in a valley on one end, the other end is a slot that it can travel a little bit. The slotted side has a smaller roller than the valley side. The cutout section of the flat piece will fit over the larger roller, so remember the orientation.

Slide the flat piece past the rollers until the thinner part of the flat piece has room to wedge between both rollers. Now you need to secure the flat piece to something sturdy, like a bench vise or bolt it down via the T40 screw hole.

Get a metal bar of some sort, wedge it into the spring (the movable side) and push the spring away from the center while pulling the flat piece into place.

If this works (?) let me know.

Also, the orientation is a bit strange when installing. Try fitting the T40 in from the outside first, just so you know how it is supposed to feel when putting it in from the door side.

Klaus -

If you're still interested in this door stop question great - if not, fine too -but one more thing I noticed is that one of the rollers is not completely level and sits a little above the other roller - the roller on the "far" side (from inside the car) seems to be off axis. As a result the flat piece rises and falls to contact these offset rollers as you close the door. The green piping of the "carabiner" piece are also not aligned like when I got the part and it shifts also during door operation.

If the roller/carabiner/flat piece are not perfectly on the level would this change surface area/ contact point enough to affect the "resistance" of the stops?

hope this makes sense,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

The only grease points should be the rollers, one on the spring and the other, wider one in the frame. No grease (white lithium grease) on the tongue that attaches to the A pillar. Perhaps a little in the pivot point at the T40 hinge.

The rollers are different widths, so the tonge part will only travel on half of the wide roller.

The "carabiner" piece is the spring, mine is a bit rusty. I am still surprised that yours came apart! The spring is extremely hard to move, and the tongue even harder. Even dropping it on a cement floor wouldn't do anything except chip the floor.

If the pick&pull had some 850's, I would stop by and get you a passenger side door stop. There is only one 1993 850 and doesn't have any parts I want.

Are you sure you cannot bring it back to the dealer an ask for a new one? You are supposed to have a year.

Klaus -

Thanks for responding - it took a while but I got the two pieces of door stop together - the green "carabiner" into position and the flat piece between the rollers. I torqued on it in a vice and bent the carabiner part a bit but it installed just fine.

The disappointment came testing the door - it stops but barely now at the stop points - a wind or just momentum will close it - its not like the other doors.

What did i do wrong? I put grease on the rollers and the bar - too much? Would bending the vertical rod of the green part change the resistance at all?

I installed genuine volvo from FCP.

Thanks for any insight,

Andrew / St Paul, MN
