240 guy looking at a 1998 S70, advices please. Thx S70 1998

I owned and worked on many 240 and 740 cars and still have 3 in the garage. I'm going to look at a 98 s70 with 200, 000 miles tomorrow. The reason for that is I kind of like to havew a front wheel car in my fleet. From reading in this forum, I leared that 98 is a good year for s70. Anything I need to particularly look for and pay attention to when I test drive the car tomorrow? THX in advance. Erwin

If the seller is trying to hide a check engine light and disconnects the battery before you show up, the outside temperature defaults to centigrade!

Most O2 sensor errors and EVAP errors will not show up for a 100 miles or so after the codes are cleared.

Also ask about the radio code! If the seller knows this off the top of his head, the engine codes have probably been cleared.

Hi Erwin,

I remember you from the 700 board, now I'm in a 95 850 that I like.

One thing that I'd do is try to see the ground under the car after it's been parked all night and see if there's any oil leaks. The 5 cyl engines don't thrive on dino oil, helping to clog the EGR system, and after excessive pressure builds up engine seals tend to fail. The rear main seal is a big job. Use full synthetic oil.

Make sure the A/C works.

Look at the Tranny fluid, Be nervous if it is cruddy.

It's super to get a detailed service record. Gotta be serious about the timing belt since its an interference engine.

You should allow $$ to rehab the suspension/brakes/tuneup/alignment/misc stuff such as motor mounts as needed.

You'll like the S70, and appreciate the body parts being galvanized.

Bill

Bill, Thx. It's so good to see a familar face! The rear main seal is a good point. I'll pay more attention. "NEW TIMING BELT, NEW FRONT STRUTS, NEW WATER PUMP" as stated in the ad. Looks like a nice car and the asking price is 2500. I'll find out more once I see it tomorrow. Erwin

191K miles is a lot for the price. When you go to see the car, before you trun on the ignition, set the climate control vent selector to auto and the blower speed to auto. Assuming this car has electronic climate control, if there is an error, the recirc and AC switch will blink yellow 20 times and the auto function no longer works.

The AC evaporator tends to leak on these cars and repairing/replacing is like replacing the blower motor on the 240.

There are no fog lights, so I can only assume that the engine is without a turbo. This is good and bad, good because the turbo adds a little more complexity to the PCV system cleaning. Bad, is the lack of bhp for merging onto highways.

If the PCV system has not been replaced, this is a 5 hour job in your garage.

The tranny dipstick is behind the driver's side headlight, under the fresh air intake. A yellow handle. Pull up carefully and check the color. It should be red, not brown!
