new to me, what to check V70-XC70 1998

Obtaining 1998 V70 with 69000 miles on it. I want to first preserve and then improve this vehicle. It has had Volvo dealership maintenance up to now. Any known problem areas to monitor? What mods are advantageous? Thanks in advance.

    If your car was maintained by a dealer. go and see them,

    Get the records that you can and find out if they took care of the car recently.

    If they are like my dealer they probably took good care of the car. We have driven over 500k miles and had only 3 breakdowns - alternator gave out at 215k and killed 740 battery in Michigan - bad starter at rest area 170K 855 - and stuck brake rotor 150k another 850.

    If the owner did any rep[airs and maintenance regularly, the car should need nothing, although Klaus' recommendations are always appropriate.

    Low mileage is nice, but things wear out just standing still. The timing belt and tensioner were due at 70K, but check the sticker anyway - 10 years is also time to replace.

    Get some vinyl/rubber preservative spray and coat the axle boots with it. Same with the rubber around the windows, door sils, trunk seal, hood seal. Ditto for the engine hoses.

    Replace the wiper blades with the new fangled blades that lay flat on the glass.

    Replace the brake fluid, not on dealer's schedule of maintenance.

    If it was serviced at a dealership, ask for a copy of the records, they can print out the couple of pages on this car and keep them in a folder.

    Get some leather treatment and bathe the leather parts of the seats when the interior is warm enough (70F+). Do NOT ever use ArmorAll anywhere inside of the car. Only wipe the top of the dash with warm soapy water.

    Wax the rear liftgate, especially the bottom edge. Little scratches will start to rust later.

    Check the cabin air filter.

    Yes, at 69k it shouldn't need much. Believe the timing belt is due at 70k but it may be 105k. There should be a sticker under the hood indicating when it was changed if it has been done. Not sure which year the change was made to 105k intervals. I believe it was 1999. Check your owners manual. Or someone here might pipe in.

    Besides the normal brakes and tires, I would check the condition of all the rubber. After all the car is 16 years old! Check belts and hoses specifically.

    Mods: Buy the best tires you can afford. You could upgrade the front struts, rear shocks and maybe add a front brace or wider sway bars if you like sporty driving. There isn't alot you can to a NA engine. If it is a turbo then power shouldn't be an issue...:)

    Wow with that kind of mileage regular service and fluid changes are all that it should need. Read the manual it has some great tips on making the car last. even
    how to properly wash it.
    How did it get used so little ?

      Thanks for the info. Good stuff. elderly person ownership accounts for low mileage. She is AWD and turbo. Is there a transfer case and is it an issue?
