Hello, I used the search , but found nothing. I'm not sure if I searched right. Anyway I have a broken odometer gear. Someone told me that the computer in the car keeps the mileage, and can be accessed with a code reader. Is this true? I have been trying to keep a ruff idea of the mileage but with so many problems with the timing belt etc I worry. I have the part but just waiting to be able to work on it. THX

1995 was the last year that owners could read their own computers. Unless you have a code reader that can read Volvo specific codes, you are at the mercy of the dealer or an indie with a Volvo scan tool that can display the miles.

I suggest you do this just before replacing the odo gear so the miles will be very close to accurate. A pencil with eraser in a drill bit works great to spin the odo.

I do hope I am not hi-jacking this thread...

I bought a used 1996 850 Turbo Wagon in September 2011 with a broken odo showing 137K, but have reason to believe it is over 202K. After repairing the little broken gear, I went to my local Volvo dealer and asked them to read the mileage. The Service Manager informed me that there was "no way" to retrieve the actual mileage for this model year.

This is contrary to everything I have heard. What gives?

Greg

Your local dealer lied.

I am getting ready to repair my odometer on my '96 850. I have seen different stories about scanning the computer for the actual milage. I'm hoping to get the right number so I can do my timing belt at the right time. I will have to go about 60 miles to get to a dealer so I'm trying to make sure the trip is not for nothing. thanks

You might want to talk to a mechanic and offer him $10 to read it. I got lucky as a mechanic followed me out of the service area after he heard the 'technician' tell me to leave the car overnight and they will charge me $135.

The other part of the luck was that the mechanic has a son with a 1996 854 and he just did the same with his car.

I have 2 dealers within 10 miles, so no big deal. The first tried and failed. The odo is is 3-4 levels deep under an obscure heading. Remember, the OBDI port is A-7 (instrument cluster).

Good luck.
