SIPS works C70 1999SIP

Well, I got a chance to see how the SIPS technology works up close and personal. Thankfully neither myself or my 6 year old son in the backseat were injured. Not even a scratch after beig hit broadside at around 40-45 MPH. (yes the other driver ran a stop sign - never even hit the brakes!)Unfortunatly my car was not so luckey. The side door and rear quarter pamel were severly damaged. While I was able to drive away, the car has been definatly tweaked.

By most accounts I have the car into one of the best shops in town - my question is what should I be on the look-out for in regards to the repairs. Any suggestions or experiences in this area will be apreciated.

    Re: SIPS works S70 1998

    Jerry,

I'm glad to hear that you and your son are not injured.

My car was rear-ended and had serious structural damage. The body shop did a wonderful job. True, the car is not the same.

Specifically, some of the tolerances are not quite as tight and the paint is not blemish free as from the factory. On the other hand, the car feels just a solid and safe as before--no wind noise, water leaks, rattles, etc. The ride is as supple and the handling just a precise.

So, for me, having a vehicle whose quirks are known is worth the trade-off of a few dirt specks and +/- 1 millimeter tolerances.

    Best wishes,

    Bryan

    Re: SIPS works C70 1999SIP

In your 99 model does the SIPS inflate such that it protects your

head? I think they went to that in 99. On my 98 and 95 it

protects the chest but does not extend to protect the head. I

think that would make a big difference between walking away and

    not.

The side air curtains on newer models look like the way to

go and with all the high rding SUVs I wish I had them in

    our cars.

I can't really recall. I don't think it fully covered the head, but came up to around shoulder level. Initial damage estimate on the car was $14K. The adjuster won't salvage unless the damage exceeded 70% of value of the car. Looks like I will be driving a FORD Taurus until the end of March. I will keep you advised on how the repair progresses.

I bought the C70 because it was the modern day equivilent of my old BMW 6 series, a classy, sporty touring car. I did not think too much about the saftey features - now I would be hard pressed to buy anything other than another Volvo.

I know volvo's are built for this sort of thing, but... the other guy hit you at 40-45 mph? If he was going that fast, I doubt a body shop can save your car. Glad to hear you and your son are safe though, that's what's important.

    Re: SIPS works C70 1999SIP

If it is just cosmetic damage then the car will be fine once it has been repaired by a qualified Volvo body shop. If the main frame has been damaged or bent, you might as well try to get the car totaled. Mike is right about this....it will never ever the same! You will always find another C70 and just thank God you and your son are okay. My wife and I have been on 2 bad Volvo wrecks. Both of us were able to walk away from the accident with minor bruises. Those Volvos are what everyone say it is....safe for life!

You might want to check for frame damage or something of that sort, since you said the accident was pretty bad. All I can say is that your car will never be the same...
