v70 odd fluid smell

Hello,

I have a 2006 V70, 2.5T w/ 45K miles. Slight hot fluid smell only apparent when hood is popped. Can't tell if its Mobil 1( switched to at 35k) or the power steering fluid (chf-11s). It shouldn't have leaks at this milage and I will monitor the oil level. I haven't done my own changes. Any chance splatter from the filler cap could create a lingering smell when hot ( for weeks after change)? There was also one occasion when the PS fluid level was low and I topped it off, but since this isn't ATF like the 850 had, I can't say what burning chf-11s smells like.

Thanks in advance.

solved? v70 odd fluid smell

Klaus,

Put in a new filler cap seal. Lifted the car and looked beneath the plastic housing at the filter. The tech didn't get the thing screwed on right and it was weeping. As you know, on the newer V70s, there is no metal housing for the filter, but rather, you put in a new filter and reuse the metal reservoir. Anyway, got a new seal/o-ring put on it as well, so we'll see. No evidence of leaks elsewhere. Gotta love sloppy work.

You could replace the oil cap gasket, and then check for a leaky oil return seal for the turbo.

Thanks, Klaus! This is my first turbo, so I wouldn't have thought about the return seal, etc.

One more thing: the oil-like odor distinctly comes from the passenger side of the engine. When the passenger door is open, it wafts into that side of the car between via the seam between door and the engine. I did notice that they overfilled the oil by about .5 quarts (sloppy work), so I'll drain off the excess (maybe that's creating too much pressure?)

Will also get a new oil filler cap gasket.

Cheers.
