215/40/17 on 850R Wheels 850 1997

It's getting close for another set of tires and I would like to gather people's opinion who have switched or used the 215/40/17 tire size. The OEM size on the the 850R is 205/45/17 which has a very limited brand selection and this is one of the reasons that I am contemplating over switching tire size. I have gone to the 215/45/17 but tire aspect ratio on the 850R wheels looked quite lame. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: 215/40/17 on 850R Wheels 850 1997

Hi Sonny,

I'm just about to get some new tires for my 850R. I just went to Discount Tire today. I was trying to decide between the Pirelli P7000 SS 215/40/ZR17 or the Yokohama Parada 215/40/ZR17. I was leaning more towards the Pirelli's because of all season capabilities, but after speaking to a few guys at Discount Tire, I've decided on the Yokohama's. One of the guys there said he had the Yoko's on his Eclipse. I asked how they handle in the snow (any more snow coming in Chicago!?). He said they were pretty good for high-performance tires. He also said when driving in the rain, NO problems at all. The tread wear is 300 (which is only 20 less than Pirelli's). The tread design is outrageous! What tires are you looking at currently?

I am also deciding on those Pirelli P7000SS or the Yokohama Parada. Just from an appearance perspective, those Parada are awesome....they're the bomb! But I don't think they will work well for the snow in Chicago. And this may lean me towards the Pirelli.

I totally agree with you on the appearance aspect of the of Parada's. I was also leaning more towards the Pirelli's because of the snow factor but after talking to the guy with the Parada's on his Eclipse, I've changed my mind. He said they were decent in the snow which is good enough for me. I'm not planning on driving my car as if it had snow tires anyways.

215/40/17s work fine. I can not think of any problems you will have.

I am using the 215/45ZR-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE730

on all four corners and have no problems at all.

Re: 215/40/17 on 850R Wheels 850 1996R

Would you say that the RE730's are the best tire for that size?

I *was* going to go with 215/45-17 but apparently they look bad. How can they look bad?

But I am left with not many choices -

Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Position

Potenza RE730

Pirelli P7000 SS

Which would be the best? This is for the standard 850 R wheels.

Thanks..

Re: 215/40/17 on 850R Wheels 850 1996R

I wouldn't say the 215/45/17 size looks *bad*. It just looks odd because the side wall is bigger. The lower profile 205/45/17 looks more "racy" i guess you can call it. FYI, I tried the 215/45/17 on my 850R with 17" rims and experienced major rubbing on tight turns. I have small holes in the plastic wheel well now. If you do go with the 215/40/17 size, Yokohama also has the Parada's. I've heard some good things about them. I'm getting them installed on my car this weekend. I'll give you an update on them.

Re: 215/40/17 on 850R Wheels 850 1996R

I have the 215/45/17 tires and I would say that the "they look bad" actually means (IMHO) that this tire looks and sits noticeably higher than a 205/45/17 size. It does not look appropriate for the size 17" wheels that an 850R is fitted with. It just looks lame because of the higher sidewall. You do have more selection with the 215/40/17 size but of course you have to be more cautious of road pothole problems.
