The K&N filter comes oiled, so no need to clean it for the first few years. I prefer the spray can approach, it applies more evenly and can be added thinly. I found that a leaf blower at close quarters will push some of the excess oil out after cleaning, also gets soapy water out easier than drying in the sun.
Because of the MAF, you only want a thin coat of oil. If you do over oil the filter and the MAF gets coated, a MAF cleaner will do wonders.
