Brake Problems in Cold S40-V40 00

I have been having some problems with getting my brakes to work properly in the cold after just starting the car. Here in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area in MN the temperature has not been over 15 degrees F in the last three weeks during the day. As I write this it is a warm 12 F (temps have been hovering at 0 F or below during the day). Anyway, when I pull out of the driveway and hit the brakes they just don't want to stop the car; then it gets progressively better then to normal as I drive and brake. Question is: anyone else out there that drives in this kind of cold climate seen this kind of problem?? All previous non-Volvos of mine have not had this problem in the cold. Should I get it checked out?? Any suggestions??

Thanks,

Pete.

As both the other responses mentioned, there is an electric vac pump that is switched on when the vacuum level in intake is inadequate.

You can test for it working by depressing the brake pedal few times with key off and then switch on the ignition. The pump is very audible and it will run for 1-2 seconds when key is first turned on. If you don't hear the rumble then the pump is not functioning.

      You Guys Are Right,

My dealer is aware of the problem. They are going to check the fuse that was mentioned (probably the cause) and the pump. Thank you for all of your help. Have a great new year!

      Pete.

This is a known problem....I have read about it on this board, and your dealer should know about it...and the fix for it. It is as Arno said.....something to do with the vac-pump not working up to par.

There is an electric vacuum pump to provide vacuum until the engine does that. What can happen is that the fuse blows or the pump itself dies.

Have the dealer check it out. It's not normal anyway, at least with stock Volvo brake pads.

    Bye, Arno.
