I have a 2001 V70 with the rear wiper not working. The fuse in the rear panel for the wiper is OK. The fuse in the engine panel for the rear wiper is OK. I replaced both with no difference. I connected the wiper motor directly to a battery charger and it worked. There is no power to the motor when the switch is turned on. I removed interior panels to get at wiring and connections appear to be clean. I checked where the wiring harness might be compromised at the hinge and nothing appears broken. The dealer can't tell me if there is a relay for the wiper without spending some time and $$ on it but I interchanged each of the relays in the rear panel since all but one of them are the same. It could be the larger odd relay but Im not sure. Can anyone give advice before I do the unthinkable and make an appt at the dealer??

How long has the wiper been dead? If it doesn't get used much, the road salt can get to the post and corrode it enough for the wiper to freeze up.
I suggest spraying a little PBBlaster on the post so that it draws into the door panel, wait for a day and repeat. Then turn the wiper on and try moving the arm by hand, gently!

yes, there is a relay for the rear wiper.
The relay is in the REM section, left rear area inside the cargo area.
#17 is the one. Label it and exchange with #13.

When you say cargo, I've got a wagon, do you mean in the panel of the rear door area? Are there fuses like that many in there?

I'll try this later today when the car returns home but I didn't notice any numbering system for the relays. where are the numbers?

you'll find the small numbers next to each relay.
Turn the rear wiper on(ignition switch on I) and you'll hear a continuous click. Put your hand on the relay that is clicking, then that's the one that controls the rear wiper. Turn ignition off.
Put a mark on this relay and replace with one of the other similar relay.
Try the rear wiper again. Recheck the fuse if not working.

I found the relay numbers. Thanks for that. switched #13 with #17. turned the wiper on with ignition on. nothing. no clicking or feel at any relay. I then rechecked the two fuses marked "rear wiper": a 10A in the engine bay and a 15A in the cargo area. replaced them anyway. no joy. I thought it might be the switch on the steering column stock. the washer part of the switch works and wiggling it doesn't do anything. Any more ideas??

when I had the same problem, I could hear a constant click coming from the relay area. I put my hand on them until I could feel it was #16 or #17 that was clicking. That's how I found out that was the relay that worked with the rear wiper.
The only other suggestion is to recheck the wiring bundle at the hing of the tailgate.
Post back if you find the fix.

It turned out to be a faulty control module. By the time I took the car to a professional, I had lost the rear wiper, defogger, reserve lights and rear door locks. They took the module apart, it looked clean, put it back together and everything worked ... for now. There may be a weak connection somewhere on the module but at $1000 replacement cost, I think I'll nurse this along for a while. Thanks for your help.

The probable weak connection could be the power supply. Unplug it, clean both, male and female, apply gobbs of di-electric grease and put back together. Inspect the ground wire, if there is one, or any screws holding it in place.

which module was the defective part? where is it? part number? the whole REM?
maybe you can get a used one much cheaper from Erie-Vovo, they sell used volvo parts with lifetime warranty.

As I understand it, the defective module is mounted on the rear fuse panel. I have since made a "remote" door lock opener with a 30 inch length of 3/4 in dowelling with a split cut in the end so I can open the doors from the rear hatch. It works and I have $1000 in my jeans!

nice to hear you made a fix that saved you big bucks.
Can you post a couple of pictures to see what exactly you did?

I had the wiring bundle all apart at the hinge and it looks Ok. If the relay was at fault, would it still click??

undo the relay swap, and then see if you hear the click at the relay with the ignition switch on and the rear wiper on.

Sorry, where are the fuses in the cargo hold? I have a wagon. Are there fuses in the very rear panel of the hatch?
|

|
yes, in the wagon in the left rearmost area there is a small panel that opens up.
There is the REM(Rear Electronic Module) with some fuses and a bunch of look alike relays.
