'99 S70 transmission replacement

Well, I feel like investing in a money pit... I've found an s70 AWD at a wonderful price but with a bad transmission. I have yet to purchase it, but and thinking of taking it on...

First off: terrible idea?

Secondly: Is it best to drop the transmission then replace it or pull up and out the engine and the tranny and work on them outside the car? I'd also do a timing belt on the car, so having the engine out would make that (and possibly other repairs/replacements) easier. Being able to see everything is wonderful...

Thirdly: Will only the AW42AWD fit? I know its a 'terrible' transmission when abused, so is it possible to put in an other, or do I really have to search and find a 'good' tranny at a junkyard or something. I am planning on doing this as cheap as possible so I'd rather spend $100 on a gamble transmission opposed to a 'rebuilt' or 'reconditioned' at 1000+.. Rear damaged cars (or a car with obvious engine damage) would be better feeder cars. Can I get the 50/51, assuming I bring along the TCM, to work? Is it worth the headache?

Finally: When I do all this, should I do the rebuilding on the Bevel gear like jadhnm did, or should I wait to see if the gear fails? I'd want to get at least 75-100k out of this car, and with a possible moving to Wyoming for a job, I'd appreciate the AWD a lot...

Replacing the timing belt and PCV system is not a reason to 'drop' the engine. Removing the tranny by itself is not an easy task, but removing the engine is even more difficult in my book. I have seen mechanics lift the engine/tranny up and out, and also watched as they removed the combination by lowering the sub frame to the ground and lifting the car. Both are major surgery and are dependent on the equipment you have available.

Upgrading the tranny to a 50/51 is more than just the TCM, there is extra wiring and an upgraded ECM if my memory serves me correctly.

I would find a 'good' tranny in a junk yard, inspect the current bevel gear while it is out, and leave the engine alone(except for the rear main seal).

If you had time, you should find out what really is wrong with the tranny. Replacing a few solenoids is much cheaper. Of course, if the torque converter is slipping, it is beyond hope.

I was thinking of either dropping the transmission or lifting both out. I've looked at the procedure for doing either and it seems that you either remove all the electrical connections and a few extra hoses and such to lift them out, or you have to drop the subframe to get the transmission off. As far as I can tell you have to lower the engine and transmission about a foot right before you separate them. Either way is a ton of work, I just figured it'd be slightly easier to not do the subframe. And I was trying to convince myself it'd be worth it having the engine out to do jobs like that (yes, unnecessary to pull the engine out just for that, but if its out, it'd be easier to see everything..)

I've got tons of time I figure I'd likely pull the bevel gear and maybe more one weekend, then probably get the transmission off. I figure I'm replacing it so I'll probably tear it apart and see what there is to see. I wish it was a solenoid but perhaps I can figure out whats wrong and rebuild.

I've never had an AWD so how convincingly can I attach it to the transmission on the 'donor' car so I can claim its all part of the 'transmission'?

You must get a tranny that is for AWD. A FWD tranny does not have the 90 degree output shaft needed for AWD. 1998-2000 will fit, but only 4 speed.

I looked at Strandberg and they only had 1 with a 145K miles on it. Perhaps Erie Vovo?

Assuming the output shaft isn't crap, I wonder if I can shove everything into the case... Something tells me its not going to work like that... I figure I'll find a V70 AWD in a junkyard to pull from eventually.

Is it weird that this is the car I choose to have as my 'spare?'

Brings to mind someone else on the BB who thought the tranny was shot. Car would shift into gear but not move, forward or backward. One of his axles slipped out and the diff just spun. But tht was FWD.

If there are codes, then it is only the solenoids. If the rear goes out, you would still have FWD in any case, just noisy. If the torque converter slips, you need a new tranny.

You should buy my "R". I will even fix the oil cooler line leak, as soon as I figure out which one is leaking. Dark up there.
