Transmission noise? Stalls V70-XC70

1999 V70 n/a, the transmission has started to make a relatively load whirring/rattling sound while in P or N. When shifting to D or R the noise stops, but the car lurches and stall’s. In order to drive the car I have to quickly switch from N to D and when the car stalls select N, restart engine, select D, stall N restart D etc a few times till the car is rolling, doesn’t stall and we are off! If it is cold outside and or the car is cold this condition is worse. Once engine/tranny warm I can shift into D and start off OK but when stopping the car I have to shift to N, before coming to a complete stop or the engine stalls. The noise occurs anytime the transmission is in P or N. I did change the fluid, flush method, no improvement. Any ideas? The car was dealer serviced to 75 k, have all receipts when I bought her and I have changed the fluid every 30-35 k since that, 172k on car and I don’t abuse the tranny? Any ideas or has anyone experienced the same or similar?
I’ve been following this site for the last 97k miles and do all my own servicing/troubleshooting, thanks to Brickboard! This is my first posting.
Thanks!

Transmission noise? Stalls V70-XC70

After 100K miles, it is time to look for a newer car :(

The rattle is the clue. Nothing is your fault in this case. You could try 'dumping' ATF from the drain plug and see if there are any metal bits, but if there are any, it is already too late.

You will need a replacement tranny, so find and buy a 2003+ V70.

Transmission noise? Stalls V70-XC70

Just luck of the draw, I have a 99 V70 with 300K and no transmission issues.

i think 100k miles = time to replace the car is a ridiculous statement.

Transmission noise? Stalls V70-XC70

Ended up replacing transmission with a used unit($300) already removed.
Removed entire engine with transaxle and replaced timing belt tensioner, dropped pan did o rings, oil seals cam and RMS etc. and other preventive maintenance.

Been back on road for a few years now, good for another 100k methinks.

Does the 2003 + have a better transmission?

If you are thinking about buying a 2003, yes, the tranny is better.

Transmission noise? Stalls V70-XC70

Hello, Klaus is right, but.......If the rest your car is well maintained and all you need is a rebuild then why not reap the benifit of the cheaper transmission design? My trannie guy called the 4-speed a GM trans; vastly cheaper than the 5-speed Japanese unit. If your budget forces you to look at a 2003-4 Volvo, you'll be buying someone else's 6-7 year old car with how many miles? I know there's a formula which applies to ~$2,000 trannie rebuilds on ~$4,000 cars BUT a warrantied '05 to '09 will cost you what? You know your situation; you do the math. Prices could be real good if you shop. I personally want my current car to get me and my family to the other side of the tech divide; TRANSLATION a bigger choise of better, economical and LE$$ FANCY cars. Kira

FWIW both the 4 speed and 5 speed transmissions were made by Aisin, and at least the 5 speed was also used by GM (among other companies). Ditto on the 6-speed.

4-speed: Aisin AW42 or AW42-50 or AW50-42 (depends on where you read it)
http://www.nuceng.ca/bill/volvo/database/tranny.htm#AW42

5-speed: Aisin AF33

6-speed: AWTF-80_SC

Although according to the XC90 wikipedia page, this model also used a 4-speed from GM:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4T60-E_transmission.
I have not found any information on whether this transmission was used in any other model or not. (ie: I don't think it was used in the 850/x70 models). Actually this and the main volvo page are the only source I have ever found that stated that Volvo ever used a transmission sourced from somewhere other than Aisin or Getrag (who I believe is the manufacturer of their manual transmissions like the M90.

There may in fact be little difference between the GM 4T60-E and the AW42-50?
