What is the best way to avoid future ignition key stuck prolem ? 850 1994turbo

Since we have many ignition key stuck problem .. can not remove the key from the switch ...

What is the best way to preventing from happening ??

WD40 the ignition switch ??

But some Ghaphis powder in the ignition switch ???

Any input ? to avoid this problem to all...

Preventing is the best solution don't we said

    Last year Road and Track magazine mentioned an experience with an ignition lock problem with BMWs.

    The problem was caused by too much weight on the keys and resulted in a new lock with a list price of something obscene like $1800!

    I think that they wrote that BMW mentions the use of key fobs in they owner's manual and reccomend a small leather fob only.

    Everybody missed the probable answer.... Look at the shift lock override button to the front right of the shift lever. If it is stuck down, the key won't come out. - Happened to me. wife spilled a bit of Pepsi on the button, and dog stomped on it. Button stuck down. Key wouldn't come out. Dealer didn't know the answer. I found it on my own. Pop the button back up, and the key can be moved to the 'remove' position. Check it out.

    If the key won't come out it's probably because the key-lock cable is binding. There is a cable running from the shifter to the ignition lock that prevents removal of key unless in park. Sometimes the mechanism gets sticky from beverage spills or other causes. Usually removal of center console and lubrication of the linkage solves the problem.

    I had the ignition cylinder replaced under warranty once on my '95 850 turbo and a tech told me to keep as few items and keys dangling on the same keyring as the car key. Just the car key and the remote fob is best he said.

      Hmmm. We buy one of the best made cars around, and the igintion lock can handle the weight of our house keys? Sounds spurious to me. Click and clack the Tappet Brothers (Car Talk) indicated on a show a couple months ago that this is a known Volvo problem and they recommended, with the steering column in the lcoked position, ramming the steering wheel hard to one side. They said "you couldn't possibly break anything." Sounds like they believe this problem to be related to the steering column lock mechanism.

        Yeah, I know what you mean. When the tech told me that tidbit of info. regarding the ignition cylinder I was, like, well, that's pretty stupid. My families' other two cars don't seem to care how many keys are dangling from THEIR ignition cylinders. I've come to realize that Volvo almost never admit to known problems on their cars.

          Derspi,

          Almost all car companies-domestic and foreign- recommend that you don't attach any other keys to your ignition key as it puts some kind of extra wear on the key cylinder with all that weight dangling there. It's not a Volvo problem only.

            I understand where you're coming from and it all makes sense not to put too much weight and undue stress on the cylinder but this is a problem that I have experienced myself on my Volvo. The cylinder on Volvos (or maybe just 850s) seem to be fragile and more susceptible to damage is what I'm trying to get at. Other family members hang a few extra keys along with a keychain on their cars (a MB and BMW) and they have never had a problem with the cylinders on those cars whereas all it took to break the cylinder on my Volvo was a remote fob, car key, and small keychain (very small & not heavy at all I might add). Maybe it's a random failure but the fact that another poster has had the same problem suggests otherwise.

              well, take a look at your 850 key

              I haven't looked at a benz or BMW key for a while

              but

              I've seen Gm and Honda and Ford keys

              (and a key from a 940 and 760)

              volvo has on the newer/pricier cars (760) a key which is difficult to "shave" and then steal a car with...

              that design may make it more prone to the kind of failure described.

              I'm not sure that is a "defect" in the classic sense of the word.
