well, take a look at your 850 key

I haven't looked at a benz or BMW key for a while

but

I've seen Gm and Honda and Ford keys

(and a key from a 940 and 760)

volvo has on the newer/pricier cars (760) a key which is difficult to "shave" and then steal a car with...

that design may make it more prone to the kind of failure described.

I'm not sure that is a "defect" in the classic sense of the word.
