It also could be the temp control sensor, about $50 at the dealer. I had the same sort of issue. Next time it happens pop the hood and see if the AC lines (back by the fire wall) are frozen, if they are that's the problem. The sensor is located inside the car.
What I think happened is the system froze and cut out. Then you shut it off and the system thawed, then you turned it on after it thawed and it worked.
There is a posting about that somewhere on brickboard from about 2 years ago. This is where I found out about the fix! Maybe you can find it by using a search from my username. It's a real easy fix!
