No Spark 850

My '97 850 sedan has developed a no spark condition....I have replaced the cam sensor, crank sensor, ignition switch, coil, traced the harness, all to no avail...the vehicle produces a timed spark as you let off the ignition switch, for 1 or 2 revolutions of the engine, until fully stopped....no spark at all while cranking....replaced the ecm with a used identical unit..voila...it runs..for 2 days..it has died again...same condition...coincidence I ask...possibly.
My sad tale continues...I installed the ecm from my other '97 volvo, a wagon with auto transmission,(the sedan is a 5 speed)...no luck..the ecm's are not the same between the two..and it gets better...now the wagon exhibits the same condition with its original ecm, as if some condition in the sedan has either fried or deprogrammed the unit from the wagon..confused yet??..I am...
Any thoughts short of napalm would be greatly appreciated...
Mark

So...whatever the problem is it's ruined three ECU's? That doesn't sound like a bad ground but rather an electrical short of some kind. I've heard about resetting ECU's by disconnecting the battery for a half hour or so but seem's you're accomplishing the same thing by removing and swapping them between cars. Maybe, maybe not?? Have you thought about a possible short in the ignition switch? I supposed a bad ECU would rule out any reliable OBD codes but maybe give it a try?

Thanks..ignition switch is new....have 3 ecu's in my possesion...2 are "deenergized" for long perods of time....they do not reset...tried that...Looking for reasons, such as a short in the harness, which would render the ecm junk...incidentally, I have checked the ignition portion of the harness, from the various sensors back to the ecm for continuity, cross continuity, ground continuity..all seems well...body grounds are intact...what are the odds that I simply purchased an ecu (used), which was on the verge of death...what also are the odds that a non-identical ecu, such as from my other 850,(same year..automatic instead of standard, same engine), would be ruined simply by installing it and attempting to start the vehicle ..i.e....assuming there is no issue in my harness...What does it take to kill the ecu???.....Thanks again

I agree with Machine Man's analysis. The key for me was the statement "it would start as you let off the ignition switch". With the starter motor engaged, voltage on a stress system is reduced, and when you let off, the voltage rises enough to get it to catch. I've seen similer on several other cars over the years. The recommendations to check the grounds are excellent, both at the battery and at the connection to the body and engine as well as other various key components. I had a friend replace the starter twice. I kept telling him to check the ground, he did, but at the battery only. The corrosion was underneath the fitting where it mounted to the body. Good Luck!

Sounds like very low voltage from the battery. Bad ground cable from the battery or low charge/aged battery. Grounds are very important. Cranking voltage should never fall below nine volts. Make sure you have a good battery and grounds to frame and the engine block. I start out taking a digital voltmeter and putting one lead on negative lead of the battery (cables connected) and the other lead to the best metal ground on the engine and then the frame. You want to see the lowest 0.01 volt to 0.02 volt you can get. Any thing above this means less than a perfect ground. Cables can have corrosion under the insulation. Copper should look like copper. Not black colored or blue powder anywhere.

Most of the electronics operate on five volts and very low current draws. Connections of all types have to be clean and bright. The more new looking the better! I use electronic control cleaner on injector clips and simliar connectors. Just taking them off and on scrubs the surfaces that can temporary make things better! All these things have to communicate. At 5 volts its like smoke signals. Tarnish is like having fog!

I do appreciate your input...all ground connections are clean and solid..the voltage at the primary side of the coil never drops below 12+ while cranking...the vehicle does NOT start with key in the on position...jumping the starter motor to the battery with the ignition in the on position produces same results...no spark while cranking...as I stated, the only spark occurs as the engine turns to a full stop, with the starter completely out of the circuit....the vehicle has effectively destroyed 3 different, perfectly functional ecu's...I know this because I can produce the same condition in another 850 by swapping the ecu... the initial replacement of the ecu resolved the issue...THAT replacement is now junk...it lasted 2 days...once the vehicle has smoked the ecu, I find that there is no 5 volt signal available at the cam sensor connector, only 12, 12, and ground...this is wrong, and is the RESULT of the problem...the return signal is required for timed spark while starting....I'm left thinking that my harness is compromised in such a way as to create whatever condition is possible to render the ecu inoperable...has anybody ever seen a harness issue create such havoc?? btw..Volvo states that this model year ecu is non programmable....just replaceable...Thanks again for your response
