S80 question S80 2002

The time has come to retire my 1993 960 (235K miles) and I am considering a 2002 S80 2.9L with 73K miles.

With the gracious help from the RWD forum members, I was able to stretch 4 years and 80K miles from the 960 after things started going wrong.

I guess I am looking for some reassurances that maintenance schedules have improved with this model and that it is still possible to do repairs/maintenance at home without the need to go to the dealership.

As an example, my 93 960 had a timing belt change interval of 30K miles...

Any help would be greeatly appreciated, I am trying to narrow the field between an S80, a BMW 528i and a Nissan Maxima.

Thanks in advance.

This is a typo, right?! "...my 93 960 had a timing belt change interval of 30K miles....' .... S80 2002

re: "...my 93 960 had a timing belt change interval of 30K miles...."

30K miles? What's with that?! It shouldn't be that low mileage, even with the extra precaution because of an interference engine.

That's legit... surprisingly! Early 960's had a woefully skinny timing belt with a 30K mile change interval... there is/was an upgrade kit to use the later style timing belt to extend the change interval.

If I am not mistaken the interval was even worse for the 1992 version at 20K...

      From the official owners manual:

DRIVE BELTS(B6304F Engine) LUBRICATE BELT TENSIONER AT 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 MILES - REPLACE BELTS AT 60,000 MILES -

Ensures proper tension is maintained to operate alternator, A/C compressor and power steering.

      Check for belt wear .

Replace worn belts to avoid belt failure while driving.

Not sure about that manual as mine did not come with one, but I followed the advise of the 700/900 FAQ nearly religiously and made it to 235K...

    S80 question S80 2002

The Nissan has a timing "chain" :-) and very good reliability. The electronics on the S80 leave a lot to be desired. The BMW has real nice handling for a RWD, but when the engine starts to leak at the seams, hide your credit cards!
