turbo oil leak 850

Hi all,

My '97 850 turbo is leaking oil from what looks like the main body of the turbo. I've heard of the return lines leaking, but this seems to be coming from somewhere else. It doesn't smoke from the exhaust at all. The car has 165K miles so would a turbo replacement be common at this mileage? I sure don't think so!

Thanks,
Dave

Hmmm. I have hear of oil coming out of the rear cam seal and flowing around to the rear of the block and dripping down on the turbo area.
Check it all again, carefully. A rebuilt turbo is about $350.

I'll take another look. I just noticed it when I had the oil pan off to replace the O rings. $350 isn't bad at all for a turbo, but wouldn't it be smoking out of the exhaust if the turbo needed to be rebuilt?

      Thanks!

      Dave

Yes, most definitely! Mine S70 just blew the oil seal and I was fogging up the interstate. Burned 3 qts. in about 3 miles to the closest exit. My CAT is probably toast too. But I am going to try to burn it out. I was told that it would probably smoke for a while and might clean up.

These turbos are a lot better than the 700 series. When one of those went, you would kill mosquitos for miles around and looked like a stunt plane with a trail behind it. Pluse the rattling noise :(

It is probably not the turbo.
