That $&%*) KneeBolster! 850 1994

I am trying to replace the blower fan behind the glove box in my 1994 Volvo 850 due to what sounds like a bad bearing.

I have the new fan ready to install, but for the life of me, I cant remove the knee bolster. The guidance from Bay 13 said that it is difficult, and thats a very minor understatement.

Does anyone have a way to remove the Knee Bolster, so that I can work the original problem; replacing my blower fan??? I have all of the nuts removed, and it is free in the dash, but I cant for the life of me remove it so that I can finally get access to the fan for the removal.

Help

After having had this difficulty, I took the bolster once it was out of the car and using a round file I enlarged the mounting holes. I suspect they made it a tight fit so it would stay in place without relying on the retaining nuts staying tight. Reaming the holes a mm or two larger makes it easy to remove and return in case that is needed in future.

Pull the bolster down and to the right? Or was it to the left. Darn, I did this a few times now, it is just as difficult to get it back in.

When taking the wire couplings off the heater, the one at 11:00 o'clock slides up to come off.

It is a tight fit, but will come out. Can't remember which end gives first. It is loose? Drop the portion toward the center, may need to force it if I remember. Keep trying.

Knee bolsters are one of those rip and tear kind of things. The one thing that will help you is if you pop out the door threshold moulding where it meets the dash and there is a torx head screw there that can be removed and it will allow you to pull out that corner of the dash which will give you more room to pull the knee bolster. You cannot be weak and timid about pulling that bolster and have any success at it, once you have removed the three nuts that hold it in you need to rip that bitch down and out. Have fun.
