Limp Home Mode I Think V70-XC70 2000

My wife's car has appeared to go in to 'limp home mode'. Car idles just like it should in P and N, but when I shift the car into gear there is a noticable change in engine performance. When I shift into gear and push the accelerator it begins to stumble and appears to be missing. I did just change the timing belt a couple of weeks ago and plugs were changed a few months ago. I did not change the plug wires at the time though. I really don't think that there is any ignition issue since I would more than likely notice this when I start the car.

This stumble just came out of nowhere. Wife drove to the grocery store...all was fine. She came out of the grocery store to drive home and the problem began. Nothing leaking...nothing smells burnt. O2 sensors are fine, breather filter and cabin air filter are relatively new and clean. I had the ETM software upgrade done a few years ago and the ABS module has been repaired.

I know everyone is going to say "Get the codes", but this just happened last night (Friday) and haven't wanted to drive it away from the parking lot where it now sits for fear of damaging something.

Any help is much appreciated.

Sounds like a vacuum line came loose or the AMM is going.
This is NOT limp home mode.

What is the AMM? I am also thinking something about fuel delivery. What do you think about the chances of me driving it home? Is it possible tranny related you think?

Not tranny. The additional load put on the engine requiring more gasoline but not getting enough air seems to be the problem. The AMM = MAF, or Air Mass Meter, determines the amount of air that comes into the intake manifold. Sounds like it is trying to flood itself.
If there aren't any steep hills between the store and the house, you should be able to make it home. The AMM is on the air cleaner box with an electrical connection. Unplug it and plug it back in before you start the car. It may be a bad connection?

I am leaning toward fuel delivery. I went by and checked the plugs, everything seemed fine. What I did notice was that the small fuel filter on the front right side (battery side) had no fuel in it. I removed the bottom hose...no fuel came out. There was suction into the bottom of the filter, but no fuel coming from the small hose that come up to the filter.

If i am not mistaken, there is another fuel filter located at the rear of the car. I am hoping that this is it instead of fuel pump. I know that this will require removal of the gas tank to get to the pump. Since car is AWD it will require removal of the rear drivetrain...something I am not going to attempt this one myself

Oh well...might be time to open the check book.

That little filter is the line that goes from the charcoal cannister to the manifold. It better not have any fuel in it.
You could be right about the regular fuel filter, though. It could be restricting the fuel from the tank. That filter is exposed just infront of the driver;s side rear wheel and easy to replace.
If the fuel pump didn't work, your car wouldn't idle either.

I was corrected earlier on the small filter I spoke of. It is the same as the fuel filter on my old VW's...I just thought that it might be some sort of supplemental filter, but is for the EVAP system if my memory serves me right.

I am really at a loss as to what to do here. If its some sort of tranny issue, I don't want to drive the car, but I also don't want to have the car towed to the dealer and have them charge some astronomical fee for something that i can do at home.

Would there be any warning lights or other signal that could point toward tranny problem so that I can at least get it somewhere to read the codes other than the dealer?

If you put your car in D and the upshift arrow does not flash, then it is not a tranny problem.

It seems you have 2 choices. Drive the car to an autoparts store and borrow a code reader or take it to a dealer to read the codes.
If the car will not drive and you have to have it towed, either a dealer or good independent Volvo shop is your alternative.
