Limp Home Mode I Think V70-XC70 2000

I was corrected earlier on the small filter I spoke of. It is the same as the fuel filter on my old VW's...I just thought that it might be some sort of supplemental filter, but is for the EVAP system if my memory serves me right.

I am really at a loss as to what to do here. If its some sort of tranny issue, I don't want to drive the car, but I also don't want to have the car towed to the dealer and have them charge some astronomical fee for something that i can do at home.

Would there be any warning lights or other signal that could point toward tranny problem so that I can at least get it somewhere to read the codes other than the dealer?
