new electrical issues 850 1994

'94 855T, about 100k miles. Weird thing has happenned twice on quick deceleration nearing a complete stop in the past week...all of the warning lights on the dash light up for about 2 seconds..and then turn back off. It's so quick that I >think< I feel a loss of power in the car, but I'm not totally sure. And then tonight, leaving work, car had been started for about 10 seconds and (just) the battery light came on for about 1 second. I want to try and nip this in the bud before I end up stranded somewhere. Also, I've been in Tampa about 8 months now, and the car has been running perfect, haven't had to find a mechanic. One recommended on the site is DAN'S VOLVO SERVICE here in Tampa. Any good or bad reports?

Thx all,

Nick

These are common symptoms of the electrical portion of the ignition switch going bad. See if you can modulate the problem by wiggling the keys.

Bay 13 covers the replacement process here:

I had a very similar problem on my '96 850 and changing this electrical switch portion completely cured it.

Sounds like your battery is barely hanging on. I would have it checked as well as your charging system.

Upon further review, it is not the battery light that is coming on individually. It is the coolant light; it just happenned again this morning and I saw that it was not the battery light, which I had assumed it was last time a red light flashed at me. I haven't flushed or touched the coolant in about a year and a half, so that kind of makes sense. So, I'm back to just the problem of all the warning lights coming on on quick deceleration. One gentleman said he had the same problem and it was caused by the ignition system. Seems kind of strange, but I'll call the local shop I haven't visited yet and see what he thinks...

Not ruling out a battery/alternator issue yet b/c it just seems like it should be...but thanks for the advice!!

Thanks,

Nick

Check the cap on the coolant reservoir...mine had a crack and I had to replace it. It had been leaking out and the light would flash on.

In the 850, when there is a fault in in the alternator, all the warning lights come on. If you're belt slips, it will cause this as well. If your coolant is low, it's escaping somewhere - perhaps it is leaking out of the expansion tank cap, or the small hose attached to the expansion tank, and dripping onto your belt, causing it to slip.
