We'd like to add black euro rails to the '96 850 wagon we just purchased. I read this archived thread:
http://www.brickboard.com/ARCHIVES/1997MAY/1516.shtml
but haven't had a response from any of the sources mentioned there. Does anyone have an idea where to find a discounted source for the rails? Thanks in advance for your help!

Kevin--don't know what is wrong with your post. I replied to your post October 5th, which shows up again today on my screen. Maybe it's my computer. It's quickly going to hell, to put it bluntly. Sorry to read that you got shafted by Erie. I phoned them about a month ago for a set of Eurorails for my 97R and was quoted something in the neighborhood of a hundred or so. I asked the salesperson whether that included the six screws and endcaps that cover each screw hole, noting that the six end caps were not the same, two of one, four of the other, and to make sure the two little tail pieces, which are each about four inches long, were included. The salesperson was very abrupt, and told me if I wanted all that sh-t, I should just go buy new. I thanked him and hung up. Will never buy anything from those people again. Best place to buy new is Volvo Houston, 1-800-468-0041. Dick

Dick-
I was disappointed but not entirely surprised by not receiving "everything needed to install" as I had discussed on the phone with Erie before purchasing from them. I've purchased from salvage yards before and unless I remove the part myself I've seldom gotten everything I wanted. I have ordered the missing parts from my local Volvo specialist (approx $50.00 extra that I had not intended to spend). On the other hand, I did receive the rails and the trim pieces between them, a good set of windshield pillar trim strips, and a pair of cross bars for a little more than $300 which was a lot more affordable than even the cheapest new parts I could find. I guess you have to decide if the difference in cost is worth the extra aggravation ;-)

Ask www.erievovo.com They seem to sell the rails on ebay every 2 weeks or so for about $100. They'll be used but have all the OEM hardware. It'll be worth it.

I emailed a number of places, but only got back a couple of replies. The prices for new rails were a bit steep for us, so I decided to go with used rails from Erie Vovo. They're supposed to send everything I need; I'll report back with my experience once the parts arrive. Thanks for everyone's input!

Well, I did receive the rails and they look fine, but...I thought there were going to be fasteners included and none were supplied. I guess I'll have to try and match something up from the local hardware store. My question is, does anyone know how to remove the existing trim pieces from the roof and windshield pillar areas? It looks like they pry off, but I don't want to destroy anything trying to get them loose if there are hidden fasteners of any type...thanks in advance for your help!

Kevin-
I was thinking about putting a set on a 97 850 wagon I have. Do the rails completely replace the long roof trim strips, even at the windshield area? ? If so, I may do it because the trim is in POOR shape. BTW if the trim cap at the back of the car is removed, the strip can be levered out a little at a time starting at the back...

Steve-
I haven't removed the existing trim pieces yet so I can't tell for sure exactly where the rails are positioned on the roof, but if you purchase the rails alone without any additional trim pieces you will definitely need to cut your existing trim pieces to fit around the rails. One of my original trim pieces is missing the black coating, so I purchased two used windshield pillar trim pieces that were precut for use with the rails (in order to avoid having to repaint my original trim piece after cutting).

I purchased my roof rack from Thule. The company is from Sweden and they made racks specifically to fit the Volvo.

The euro rail for Volvo wagon is only from dealer. I bought mine soon after I bought the wagon and installed it myself. It came with instruction to install.

Kevin--try Volvo Houston parts at 1-800-468-0041 for both your rails and load bars. I buy all my Volvo parts there because I found them to be the cheapest for OEM parts. I priced a set of XC rails a month or so ago, and, as I recall, Miguel, the parts manager there, quoted me $345 or thereabouts.
As a side note, the XC rails look a lot nicer on the 850 in my opinion than what came as an accessory at the time the car was made. The original rails are skinny and have a funny looking back end to them. The XC rails came out in 97 and were installed on the V-70's. They will fit the 850, no problem. Identical mounting. The XC come either smooth, the same texture as the trim plastic on the side of the door, or textured. I bought the textured rails and they really dress up the car, much more so than the thin ones. Price is generally the same for the skinny ones as the thicker, heavier looking ones on the XC's. Load bearing though is the same for both. The width or visual cross-section of the XC rails comes close to the width of the trim plastic on the doors, and, as I said, really compliments the looks. The skinny rails look more like an afterthought. Dick
