Follow up and new challenge: 745T V8 Tune up

Hi all,

THANKS for the advice a few weeks ago- the car's running great after a basic tune up.( 89 740 w/ 1990 5.0HO and AOD) Amazing how performance can degrade little by little over time.Drivability is excellent.I replaced the coil and distributor along with the other usual items..
My latest issue is the transmission ( or possibly the linkage). It's a 1990 vintage AOD- it gets the job done, but it's kinda lazy. As of yesterday,I seem to have all forward gears, but no reverse. However, the PRNDL seems to be off- I can be in park and still drive away. I wonder if I'm just not able to engage reverse because the cable is out of adjustment. It also refuses to kick down, but it will engage a lower gear it I shift it manually. I'm using the stock Volvo 740 shifter...

I'm going to take it to the rebuilder next week anyway as it's time for a fluid/filter change, and I was thinking of having them put a shift kit in like the one described below:
B&M 40263 Shift Improver Kit Automatic Transmission Kit
"Provides Crisp Shifts
On Any Stock Automatic Transmission
Eliminates Soft/Sluggish Shift
Eliminates Shift Overlap
Eliminate Clutch and Band Wear"
It's had a stock torque converter all along...Would getting a different converter make a big difference ? I'd like slightly firmer shifts, but nothing severe..Not sure what my stall speed is.

I'd like to get some more service life from this unit - if any of you have any advice or comments re other shift kits, suggestions ect., I'd appreciate it...Thanks ! Bill
