How do I remove the wheel bearings? 200 1988

I tried this task last year after I purchased the car. My head was raw from all the scratching. What is the obvious trick that I'm missing? Is there a certain tool you guys use? I have no noise or indication of bearing failure, I just want to do preventative maintenance.
