960 timing question 900

Is there a way to adjust the cam timing with out taking the belt off the cam gears, on the inline six in these cars? I'm thinking about advancing the exhaust cam, say 4 degree's, and I don't want to go thru all the pain of taking the belt tensioner, and all off to do so.
Thanks
Poolman

The three bolts that hold the cam "gears" to the front end of the cams are in slots in the "gear". The problem will be in holding the cams and marking them as there is little space around the slots, bolts, etc. Once you loosen the three bolts it is likely that pressure from the valve lifters will cause them to rotate spontaneously. Be sure to mark things before you loosen them. I'm not sure how you will measure things to know what changes you are making.

there was a bullettin about tweaking the cam timing to smooth out a fluctuating idle. That's all I remember, I can look it up next time I'm at the dealership. I don't think it was as much as 4 degrees though. I knew a tech who tried it on a '99 S80 T6, and really screwed it up, idle became horrible and check engine light was on for a CVVT (continuous variable valve timing) solenoid code, retimed the engine, and all it needed was an air mass meter.

What about the slots in the cam gears? Normally they should be centered so that leaves 1/2 the slot to play with.

Thanks for the responce guys; I know the three bolts that ya'll are refering to, is there a bolt in the middle of the gear that I could get a socket on to hold the cam while making the adjustment?
      Thanks
